You will find some similar reports of upgrades hanging like that. Indeed, about a previous build there are some long threads comparing times E.g.
How long does the 2004 upgrade take using Windows Update?

    So, once again:

Patience can be its own reward. I answered an identical question a week ago, and suggested waiting e.g. overnight. Sometimes that's what's necessary.

If still hung, then force a cold boot (press and hold power) and see if it recovers on restarting. If not, you did of course create a disk image before upgrading as is so often recommended here, I hope. E.g. using Macrium Reflect (free.

If it does, then try what once worked for me: download the 2004 iso, disconnect the internet, rt click and mount the iso, open the new drive letter created and double click setup.exe to start the upgrade.

Choose not to accept updates when prompted.

You should consider at least disabling any 3rd party security software, and ensure you have at least 25-30Gb free on C:

It's not necessarily stuck. Some cases take hours. And if not, see post #2.

Recently had one poster say just what you are- they waited... and success. You might be lucky.

Leave it to run overnight or for a longer period of time as it is still running although appearing to be stuck!
We see so many people on this forum that for some reason think it will be lightening fast, which unfortunately, this process is NOT.

    I hope this helps!

Why is it so slow, like it's a single core system. I call foul! Because Microsoft said that it would be nothing like that.

I'm staying with 1909. It's the opposite of what Microsoft said, for you. That slow, makes me imagine an event log filling up with bad block errors or WHEA corrected machine check errors.

Of course with a typical laptop 5K HDD, I would expect it to be much slower.

Nothing to do with the speed of the hardware per se. And perhaps @JoeShades can confirm the PC is functioning at normal speed afterwards and no disk errors.

Would be interesting to know what's happening though.

If you upgrade manually (by downloading the iso, then upgrading) and upgrading without accepting updates, it's very unlikely it would be 'slow'. It's better to do it in a controlled manner anyway- create a current disk image BEFORE upgrading, then start a new disk imaging sequence AFTER a successful upgrade.

But you're free to stay with 1909 of course- safer to hang back and see what others experience.
