Upgrade problem with Windows 7 Home x 32 edition to Windows 10 Home

    Hi,
I tried to upgrade a friends pc from Windows 7 Home x32 edition to Windows 10 x 32 Home edition

Unfortunately I did not obtain what windows 7 Home x32 build he has. There is no further information in System that states what version of Windows 7 Home he has.

I have tried on 5 occasions without success. Each time it gets to about 15%. A Red Cross comes up with a message saying unable to install with something saying Windows System invalid path.

Turn pc off and restart, reverts back to Windows 7 with the other message below
    Code 0xC1900101 – 0x30018

The installation failed in theFIRST_BOOT Phase with the error SYSREP_SPECIALIZE (something)?

I have no idea what is causing this problem or how to fix it.

I also ran Windows Repair Registry All In One. Almost 4 to 5 hours of time involved.

Anyone know what could be thecause and how to fix?

    Thanks

You probably ought to go into more detail about this "upgrade"............as opposed to what happened DURING it.

    Not a clean install?

Did you begin through the Win 7 interface?

Or did you boot from something other than the Win 7 hard drive?

What other drives or devices were connected to the motherboard or external ports at the time?

Do you have reason to think the hardware is Win 10 compatible?

I assume Windows Repair Registry All In One is some sort of 3rd party software. Was that a shot in the dark or are you highly experienced with registry editing?

Have you googled that error code?

Etc, etc, the more details the better.

A Red Cross comes up with a message saying unable to install with something saying Windows System invalid path.

That could be significant. It's vital to be precise about error messages to find out more.
Reproduce, post a screenshot, like this.

When upgrading fails diagnosis can be next to impossible. There are threads that go on for days here analysing logs etc.

    Start with
    Upgrade to Windows 10
    - the section following
The table at the Microsoft site below lists the most common upgrade and installation errors, and a few things you can try to fix the problems.
    - follow the links to pages with more links.

These will tell you about error messages and log files.

Standard recommendations under 'Here's how'. (Uninstall security software, perform a clean boot, try a manual upgrade (by downloading the Win 10 iso, logging in and using the iso by mounting it and then running setup.exe), and choose NOT to receive updates).

    Research the error message.

    You can try running
    setupdiag.exe
from MS (just Google it) - but often it doesn't give an obviously useful outcome - more a nod in the direction of 'we know it's hard'.

    Check the disk.
    Run
chkdsk c: /scan from admin command prompt.
    Run
    SFC /SCANNOW

Check you have at least, say, 30Gb free on C:

How old is the PC? What is it? Model? Drivers page?

Was your friend offered an upgrade to Win 10 via Windows Update, or did you use an iso or Win 10 disk?

First all, Windows 7 Home is a legit one purchased years ago from a computer shop, when Microsoft started to rollout Windows 10, old mate installed it but was not keen at the time as it had a few issues so it was rolled back to Windows 7. It was only few years later old mate wanted to upgrade to Windows 10 as Windows 7 is no longer supported.

There is only one hard drive on his pc, has a lot of space easily to install Windows 10 without problem.

Each time I tried to install Windows 10 it went through a lengthy process including Checking , Verifying and Getting things Ready stages.

However when it gets to installing there is a blue screen in the background whilst installing and there is no way you can take a screenshot of any message that's displayed.

    Check the disk.
    Run
chkdsk c: /scan from admin command prompt.
    Run
    SFC /SCANNOW

Done this prior to the upgrade.

Over 450Gb free on C drive

PC at a guess is over 5 years old

Originally offered by Microsoft Rollout ,

This time I used Windows Creation Tool to download iso then burn to DVD and try to install that way.

I have used other ways such as via Windows Update via the creation tool.

    All having the same result

I used Windows Registry All in One from Tweaking.com. I'm no expert but have used that programme in the past without issues.

I tried googling those error codes but not much success.

Ok, but that's not taking you forward. You need to try to use the information provided.

    Start with
    Upgrade to Windows 10

In particular, this is needed: again:

A Red Cross comes up with a message saying unable to install with something saying Windows System invalid path.

That could be significant. It's vital to be precise about error messages to find out more.
Reproduce, post a screenshot, like this.

I'm not going to repeat the other questions asked- please review.. thanks.

If that was installed by upgrading W7 Home to W10 Home and it activated, then at that point the PC was given a digital licence to run W10 Home. The digital licence is stored on Microsoft's activation servers and linked to the hardware ID of the PC.

A digital licence means that you can clean-install the same edition of W10 (Home in this case) at any time and skip entering a key when asked. It will activate automatically from the existing digital licence as soon as it can contact the activation servers.

So if we cannot get the upgrade to work for you, a clean install would be your alternative solution.

A requirement for Upgrading Win7 is it needs SP1 installed. [Windows 8 needs the 8.1 update.]

    @ Bree,

That's correct what you said. It would have had a digital licence. Sure, I could do a clean install for them, problem is they never had a disc that contains motherboard drivers nor have backed / saved any data to an external storage drive just in case problems occur down the track. They are in their late 70's and not computer savvy.

    @ Berton,
I'll have to check to see if it shows SP1. All I seen in System was Windows 7 Home. 32bit.

If it's SP1 it should say just below the copyright...

...and in more detail if you run System Information.
