Cant upgrade windows 10 1909 to 2004- fails with a bsod .

Hi there folks,

Have a custom built desktop 10 years old though runs quite speedily. Asus evo motherboard, 4gb ram, Samsung evo SSD Nivida 710 GPU, quad core CPU, no problem running Windows 10 pro 1909 updated from former builds. I am more than happy with how Windows 1909 is running on it.

Problem is it fails when working on updates around the 75% mark with a bsod when installing latest update 2004. It seems to go well installing and when pc restarts goes through the motion of working on updates, reaches approx 75% and then the dreaded blue screen, restarts a few times then it rolls back the changes to 1909 again. Restarted into windows, stating that 2004 couldn't be installed due to a second boot error (by the way I do have a dual boot pc with windows 7 main boot active drive and windows 10)

I have tried three times now even with a DVD of the downloaded ISO, installed the latest NVidia 446.14 drive, detached any usb hubs but still the same fail, disabled Malwarebytes at startup


To be honest I have spend maybe 6-8 hours on this, and have almost given up, as have other things to do, and probably happy enough to continue on 1909 but a few questions.

1 if you can think of anything else to try to upgrade to 2004 I would be grateful, or could it be more of a waiting game to wait a few months is case of any bugs currently present?

2 If I do stay on 1909 will I continue to get regular security updates as usual, or will Microsoft eventually insist I update to 2004 again probably with the inevitable fail on my pc?

Download and install: voidtools

Launch the application and search for
a) Setupmem.dmp
b) memory.dmp

If each are found > post separate share links using one drive, drop box, or google drive

I take it that the above instructions regarding BSOD are to be used when I am actually attempting to install version 2004 as I am back in 1909 version now, as I lost some disk space through the failed install, I just restored my Acronis image backup, so I would imagine there are no log files in the system now to show what might have happened.

As I have spent a good few hours with this now, probably don't feel like I want to try another install until I get a bit of a rest.

yes I was offered an upgrade through windows update, but that didn't go well, so used the media creation tool to burn an image of the iso, but that totally failed too.

During the upgrade planning there are Microsoft insiders that test the new operating system.
Many problems can be identified and modified before release.
Other problems were not detected by insiders and are discovered after general release.
For 2004 there are known driver problems that cause BSOD.
End users must wait until this is sorted out with Nvidia and Microsoft.
Microsoft has delayed the offering of upgrades for these configurations.
Manual upgrades are not blocked.

If you decide to upgrade again you can perform the steps in the prior post.
This may identify or confirm the problematic driver(s).
Drivers can then be modified.

Log collection with dump file debugging can be performed as needed to either confirm or fix misbehaving drivers.

After the first failed install I read online about the Nvidia problems, I have the Geforce GT 710 passive GPU so I installed the latest drive released near end of May 20 (think this was available to inside users) driver version is 446.14.

Am I right in thinking that this driver is one that shouldn't have caused a problem as it is above the version numbers that did?

The driver version was newer than the reported upgrade notification.
So the BSOD was related to the configuration.
There are error mesages, error codes, and logs that are created during upgrade failures that can be troubleshooted.

If there are BSOD they can be troubleshooted.

Well I had another go at his upgrading to 2004 from 1909, blue screen around 75% on working with updates, does this error message give any indication as to what might be causing the fail,

Its an SSD with about 100gb free on that partition, Actually I do have another widnows 10 installation as well (its actually a triple boot computer 2 versions of windows 10 and one of 7 on same SSD) that other installation upgraded to 2004 from 1909 ok, but its a lean installation with very little programs installed in it.

Just wonder if that error message shows anything that might be causing the failure .
