So just to add to this, I have literally just installed Windows 2004 version from within 1909 using the Microsoft media creation tool and choosing update this PC now, and it worked fine, I then used the same tool to create a Windows 2004 USB so that I can clean install at a later date.
I think sometimes the creation tool may fail if you use it on a front USB port or a USB hub, try using a rear (direct to motherboard) port and try a USB 2 port rather than USB 3.0 if you still have issues.

    3. Did not know about the WIM file size. First time with it.
    4. Using Hei Doc. net method now.
    5. Can't fall asleep with MS these days !!!

    Thanks for all the help
The last upgrade was using the Chrome method.

So it sounds like MCT starts but can't write to your USB's.

Would that be a correct statement?

As Bree asked are there any error messages?

The only error is a general "wim to large" to fit on stick. I have the iso expanded on an external hdd and will copy it to my C: and install from there. Have done it that way a few times. First time with the WIM thing.

It will almost always be if you use an ISO with an install.wim. We were asking why you can't use the MCT to make an ISO. That one will have an install.esd that WILL fit.

The question is what errors did the MCT give.?

I get an error like "something happened" when I start to run the WMC, This has been for a long time and posted many times in the past by others. In other words WMC will not run PERIOD with WIN 10 installed. This is on multiple machines, desktops and laptops all running PRO. That is why I started to use the Chrome browser way which worked for 1909. This is the first time I had a problem with a WIM file anywhere getting an ISO. I only ask when I run into something I can't figure out.

Problem most likely is the USB flash drive is formatted as FAT32 and the install.wim file is larger than 4GB.

And the Microsoft Media Creation Tool runs just fine under Windows 10 for tens of thousands of users, including me.

Well, it patently does run in W10 Pro as you can see from my screenshot earlier.

It's more accurate to say that the MCT won't run on your W10 - period. That's suggests it something you use on all all your machines that's the culprit. A third-party AV and/or firewall would be at the top of my list of suspects.

Try disabling or unistalling any 3rd-party apps that may be causing a conflict. Do you use a VPN? try without. Do you have a Win7 machine? The MCT runs on that too.

If you still can't get the MCT to make an ISO with an install.esd, then see if this tutorial helps.

Some people report (on Windows support forums) that running the MCT from the USB flash drive you want to use works, I have used that method once, back with 1903 I believe, and it did work, never did find out why it wouldn't work as normal. The MCT is removed from the USB during the format stage.

I downloaded the ISO to a 16G thumb drive this morning. I then chose to do the upgrade on-line for that PC. It was a 2010 aged game PC which was upgraded to Win10 1909 back in February. I then did the upgrade on-line for a new (2 mos old) HP desktop with Win 1909 installed. All went smoothly & both PC's have been running this afternoon with no issues yet. I used this site- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
