re: Fresh Start Win10 on refurbished PC

    Hi

I was going to do the Fresh Start on a refurbished PC with Win10 this but then I noticed something on the Control Panel. Comments are after the images:

re: Fresh Start Win10 on refurbished PC-controlpanel-1.jpg

On the Control Panel it says Windows 7 as indicated by the arrow. Clicking on that then it shows in the 2nd image that there is no backup.

re: Fresh Start Win10 on refurbished PC-controlpanel-2.jpg

This computer is a refurbished one that I got a little over a year ago. I'm thinking maybe it was one that had Windows 7 and then when refurbished Win10 was installed.

Does any of this (Backup) matter with the Win10 Fresh Start? I didn't want to begin it and then get some notice about Win7. By the way, the Win10 is installed on the refurbished, I have no disc for it, etc.

    Thanks for any help.

Hi, you can freely download Win 10 iso files and create installation media for any build of Win 10.

Current build: MS media creation tool.

Old builds: Heidoc iso downloader e.g.

In Win 10, (Backup and restore) Win 7 is a legacy- a deprecated tool for backwards compatibility. MS itself recommends using 3rd party tools rather than this. Nothing whatsoever to do with the PC's history.

    Thanks for the fast response.

If I understand you correctly, then I can just go ahead and do the Fresh Start since Windows10 is already on there?

The downloading of the iso files, etc., is just an option?

RE: the Win7 backup, I am on a 13" refurbbed Notebook with 128GB SSD I got back in Oct. and have the same thing in Control Panel and the same message. It does have a Win7 COA with Product Key that has a warning sticker on it that the Product Key is invalid and not to use it.

There are various options for resetting and refreshing Windows.
You can perform a clean install at any time. That's just one.
Where a PC is of unknown origin, a clean install would be advisable. If you are confident of its origin, the choice is yours, assuming the state of the O/S is sound enough.

Having a bootable Win 10 installation disk can be useful for certain basic recovery options and more.
The media creation tool can write one directly.

As dalchina stated, backup/ restore Win 7 utility has been in Win10 from the start, nothing to do with having a re furbished Win7 machine.
It is there if you clean install Win10.
It is there for backward compatibility only and should really not be used as per dalchina's advice.

Do you ("DV1") really wish to do a fresh start?

It will remove all installed programs. It'll preserve your data, but I'd hope that you have a backup for all that already.

If the computer was upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10 a clean install has advantages compared to a windows fresh start.
How did you decide on a fresh start?

Care to provide any sort of Microsoft documentation proving this? I doubt Microsoft ever said such a thing else the backup feature still there in Windows 10 as of version 1909 would have been removed.

Yes... I "Googled" it - No such documentation came up

If you mean during a clean install of Windows 10, will the Windows 7 named backup feature case an issue... no.

We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.
