    Error 0x80070057 - Activation/upgrading W10 Pro from W10 Home

    Hi,

I get an error when i key in my W10 Pro key in the 'change product key' option in 'Activation' in setting.

    The error is attached: Error 0x80070057 - Activation/upgrading W10 Pro from W10 Home-errorz.jpg

    I have tried:
    - Ensuring my internet is working (reconnecting etc)
    - Tried multiple times (after restarts etc)
    - Ensure PC is fully updated

Any advice? Hoping to upgrade to Pro without losing all my data.
    - Windows 10 Home, Version 1909

Hi, how did you obtain the key?
    See:
Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro
    - did you follow that?

If you search for your error message which I have screen OCR'd for you:
Unable to upgrade your edition Something interrupted our troubleshooting. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, wait a few minutes. and try again. (0x80070057)

there are plenty of threads with advice on MS forums, first questioning the source of the key, the original activation, then suggesting recourse to the activation troubleshooter and MS activation centre (phone) e.g.

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    5) sfc /scannow
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) dism /online /get-targeteditions

    8) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

@zbook Note when most of those steps were tried here (same error message, same code) they did not help:

I got the key from an online retailer. Yes I did use one of the steps in the tutorial above, more specifically method - To Enter a Product Key and Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

My key gets accepted however, after extensive research and contacting the seller, I've found that the key only would only work on fresh installs (fine). As i did not want to fresh install and lost all my files, i have gone ahead and tried windows 10 Pro Generic Key (even as shown in the tutorial linked). This key also gets accepted and gives the same error.

ShowKeyPlus check on the Pro key:

Original Edition: Win 10 RTM Professional Retail
    EULA Type: Retail

There are log collectors used in another Ten Forums room.

Please run each V2 and DM and upload results into this thread:

i have gone ahead and tried windows 10 Pro Generic Key (even as shown in the tutorial linked). This key also gets accepted and gives the same error.
Note post #9, second sentence, then post #12:
Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro

Do consider contacting your regional activation centre. If the source of your key was at all dubious you could be wasting your time.
