    How to change boot order in Windows 10 home


    Can I use that script on Windows 10 home edition to boot from an external Windows 7 hard drive taken from my old laptop? I do not have the installation software for Windows 7, and it is in NTFS. It was a hard drive removed from my old Asus laptop with Windows 7 on it. I have other external hard dives, but I don’t think I can copy my old sad laptop onto a fat32 formatted drive, as some people have suggested. Is there a way to boot directly to the external ssd from my laptop in Windows 10 home?

    In the boot menu, select the external Windows 7 hard drive.

    The format of FAT32 shouldn't be a problem when copying from an NTFS drive BUT a problem exists with Windows and its FAT32 limit of 32GB partition size and 4GB single-file size. If NTFS isn't usable and if at all possible I'd change the FAT32 to exFAT first as that gets around those limits. Simply put, any data copied from a drive [A] to another drive [B] takes on the format of the destination drive [B].

    I don't think Windows can prevent you from booting your PC directly from any external devices. I use Windows 10 Home, and I can always boot my PC directly from any of my external Linux devices.

    I have Win 10 (albeit Pro, but no different to Home in the boot process) installed on a SSD in an USB enclosure. I simply pull up the boot option (boot menu, or BIOS > boot order) and select the external USB drive.

    However, I have (1nce or 2wice) come across a device so old it doesn't recognise a USB boot option.
