System Upgrade

Hello,Planning to upgrade the system from 1809 version to 1903 version. Some time ago downloaded from microsoft the iso file "Win10_1903_V2_English_x64.iso", it is Build 356.I think to use same method as used to upgrade current system, as on one of the tutorials on this forum "Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade".Have also downloaded from MS updates catalog some updates to install after the upgrade.I will kindly ask you to review the list of updates attached.After this upgrade and getting used to it, I will think to upgrade to 1909 version. (One at a time).Some tips on the way will help.Answers will be appreciated.ThanksMotim

Hi, 1903 is a good choice as bad experiences with the changed file explorer search in 1909 are widely reported. MS is still fumbling around there.

a. Create disk image of what you have now- full Windows disk image.
b. Check you have at least 30Gb free on C:
c. At least disable- possibly uninstall- any 3rd party security software
d. Lowest risk, fastest attempt- disconnect your internet, attempt the upgrade using the iso
(rt click it, click Mount - if iso still associated with file explorer, open the new drive letter created, run setup.exe)
e. If all ok, re-enable any security software, connect internet, perform updates using Windows Update, create new base disk image- the first of a new set of disk images.

No. Don't do that.

You should expect 1 large cumulative update, perhaps a smaller one, and other stuff like .Net framework, flash player...

Once WU has handled that successfully, feel free to disable it, cut its neck, strangle it - whatever you like.

Hello,Thanks for your detailed answer.Here is a question: You recommend to do auto updates. If I enable auto updates after the upgrade, I do not have control over it.Several updates at the same time, if one makes troubles, I do not know which one did that.(Long time ago had something like that on my previous computer), thats why I prefered manual update, one after the other. But since I will have first a full image backup - I'll try the updates as on your answer.What about some update (KB4532693 I read about it) that deletes user profile ? is it true ?Answers always appreciated.ThanksMotim

As dalchina commented if you have a backup image you can restore.

Windows used to have a default 30 day rollback.
The current default rollback is 10 days.
This can be modified.

Point is, 1903 is a stable build. Normally MS fixes things after the build release with a CU.

By all means create a new disk image after upgrading to 1903 if you want to be cautious, then update.

There are several well-known free utilities you can use to disable WU and control updates- one is in the tutorial about disabling automatic Windows Update.

Note that updating to 1909 is via an 'enablement package' with the option of uninstalling it just like an update- easy to revert.
