    Windows 10 Reset Password?

My computer has started playing silly games so I have decided that I will reload Windows 10. To do this, I will take the option of retaining my files and reloading the rest. Things went well for a while and then I got a box with my name in it and a request for a password. Now everything stops because I have no idea what password is required and there is no help in reminding me of it. I only have one Microsoft password and this is used with my OneDrive account. That is not the one required for Windows 10! So can anyone tell me how I can find this illusive password, or are there any workrounds to get this Windows 10 reloaded? I would really appreciate some advice.

    Bob,

I suggest running a Repair install instead. Despite its name, it is an effective repair tool rather than an installation [it can be used to run Version updates aswell].

You sign in to your computer using a user account.
    - If that is an MSAccount-linked user account then it can only be reset online https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=242000
    - If it is a local user account then, unless you have prepared for the event beforehand, your password can only be reset after you have logged in to it or by another admin user account.
    - You can see which type of account you have in Settings, Accounts - Local accounts are identified as such in that dialog.

    Bob:

It's been a while since I did this, so things might have changed -- but from what I recall, to run a Repair Install, you have to be INSIDE Windows, and to do that, you have to first, login to Windows -- and from what you've said, you can't do that.

There ARE ways to reset your password, but they involve downloading and running stuff from the Internet, and if memory again serves me correctly, we are not HERE allowed to provide you any details on how to do that.

Even though it is a tutorial right here on this forum?

    Use Option 5 here:
Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10

Then log in to the built-in administrator account, and from there you can reset the password on the user's administrator account.

Many thanks for your replies. I have tried the reset option as suggested. The "Preparing to reset" part completed to 100% then gave me a blue screen at 54% of the "Resetting this PC" part. I then decided to take the further option of a Fresh Start. This did the same thing 100% complete on the first part then blue screen at 54% of the "Refreshing your device" part. It has now undone all changes and left me where I started. It just tells me there was a problem but no other assistance. Does the 54% give us a clue?

Sounds like time to back up your data files and do a clean install of Windows.

You're right - I was confusing this with another forum where folks use that excuse to find out how to bypass passwords.
