There is another issue that arose out of the installation that I just want to add to this thread before I mark it solved.
Please bear with me for a little longer whilst I do some further testing.

When I was installing games on my win 7 system I decided to use a program folder on another drive so as to easy the pressure on the C: drive. I backed up the C: drive in the event something went wrong with the win 10 installation (which it did
).
When I did a backup recovery the win 7 system came back as I had hoped but all the programs I had installed on the F: drive had gone and when I looked in the Windows.old folder ( hoping to recover them from there) some of the big games were missing and I had to reinstall them (one of them was a 94 gb download).
Not very pleased with the way win 10 installs itself, it took me 6 hours on somebody elses fact broadband connection.

Did you ever create a disk image of your F: drive?
I beleive you restored a disk image to recover your Win 7 installation. If in doing so you overwrote your F: drive or partition, that would be your responsibility.
Windows.old has nothing whatsover to do with drives other than the Windows partition.
As to installing Win 10, you have to recognise
a. It's around a 4Gb download for the basic build.
b. There may be a cumulative update further to that, which is sometimes almost as big.
c. There may also be driver updates.
How do you minimise the download issues? You plan and prepare.
Bearing in mind you are upgrading from an old O/S with potential software and hardware discrepancies, and upgrading may sometimes fail, a wise person might choose to
a. create a full disk image of everything (disk imaging is constantly and repeatedly recommended here)
b. download the Win 10 iso/create a bootable disk if needed using the MS media creation tool (for the current build).
c. attempt the upgrade (sometimes best to choose not to accept updates during that)
Thus you have the iso /bootable disk available
a. For repeat attempts
b. For an in-place upgrade repair install if ever needed with that build
c. A bootable disk to use for certain basic repair tasks.
Unlike Win 7 with hundreds of updates and servce packs, a clean install of Win 10 is typically one major download, and one major update. There may be a couple of smaller items.

If you install the classic shell option you can make more like windows 7. It is a learning curve. I gave Win10 some time and find the OS to be more than adequate. Don't be afraid of the unknown. The interwebs has all sorts of 'help' available to ferret out any problems you may run into. Would I go back to win 7 now? Nope.....basically the same windows with different doors, but better. One caveat, it does have some issues, mostly minor, ie: SFC /scannow and the DISM command sequences to correct when errors show up on the SFC scans. At first I got a lot of SFC errors, but now it is running smoothly. M$ has attended to problems through the update process all I can figure. Just some thoughts...I had more problems with the win7 to win10 in place upgrade than the fresh installed win10 units I have, but it is getting smoother as the minor problems are solved, I even dumped my windows.old after extracting and saving the 'users' folder to a USB stick just for safety's sake...Last edited by baldyfeathers; 13 Feb 2020 at 11:11.
