Thanks and you will be surprised how many legit options you really have!
Its easier than you realize and even though the Win 7 keys or even Win 8.1 keys no longer work, the Media creator still does! Even if you have to upgrade YOU GET REGISTERED. If you desire to do a clean install later you no longer need the keys.

I purchased a "Windows 10 Home 64-bit Installation/Recovery Disc Only" to simplify things.
And from where did you purchase this disc? It is likely not a genuine Microsoft disc, and therefore you open yourself up to whatever virus/malware/ransomware the creator of the disc may have placed on it.

Thanks for the concern but I bought it from Newegg so I suspect it's legit.
It only has the Win10 files but not the registration.

Started on it last night and generated the GenuineTicket.xml file. I discovered the retail version I started with is Windows XP! The machine has been upgraded throughout to Win 10. I'm hoping that's not going to be a problem, I'll see tonight!

Worked on it last night, unfortunately I'm not activated yet.
    I'm getting
" We can't activate Windows on this device as the previous version of Windows was not activated prior to upgrading to Windows 10. Go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error code: 0x803F7001"

    This is what I did.
Previously I generated a GenuineTicket.xml file from the old system.
I checked what kind of activation I had and saw it was a Windows 10 digital license.
I checked Microsoft Account and saw i didn't have an account for the old computer, just my newer one.
Got the old system an MSA and logged in with it, all looked good. (login was an email address)
    Figured I was all set!
I gutted the old case and put the new system innards in it.
Fired it up with the Win10 disc and all went well.
I then did updates for drivers and the latest version of Win10.
I then following instructions I finally got to activate time.
I checked the new hardware box, selected my old computer and got the above message "We can't activate........".
At some point I tried the GenuineTicket.xml method but to no avail.
When I generated the .xml, the system was not logged in with the MSA, just local.
Wonder if this caused a problem.
I'm thinking I should delete the GenuineTicket.xml file in case it's messing something up.
I'm wondering what exactly does the following message mean?
" We can't activate Windows on this device as the previous version of Windows was not activated prior to upgrading to Windows 10. Go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error code: 0x803F7001"
Which previous version? The one on my old system or new system? the old system was clearly activated.
Should I have activated before I did all the updates?

I'm thinking it may just be worth my while to purchase a new copy and be done with it, after all I think I bought the original XP version back in 2002! got my moneys worth, lol.

    Thanks all!
