Working on updates stuck at 27% for three hours

My Lenovo b570 was running Windows 10 1707 so I downloaded the Windows Update Assistant and it downloaded version 1909. It downloaded fine, and then the laptop restarted.

Now it says "working on updates. this will take a while 27%" and it has been at 27% for three hours now with no sign of progressing. The entire process has been at least six hours now with two hours going from 0% to 27%.

How do I get the ball rolling?

Patience... there are threads on how long Windows update can take which you may care to read. It may yet complete. Or not.

As I have said in replying to this question several times, my experience with 1 PC was that it ground to halt being left overnight. Nothing happening at about 89% I think. Upgrade started from an iso, including updates.

With that one I did a forced shut down, and on restart it undid all changes.

I then restarted the upgrade, but this time I chose not to accept updates- 1 hour later, completed.

That's just by way of an example- your case may well be different.
