dell with confusing drives d data drive vs. os c drive vs. OneDrive

So, I just bought this new dell. My last one was 12 years ago.
I get it all set up, move over my docs and settings and am impressed with the speed. I noticed though, that my C: drive is already 2/3 rds full with docs. Then I notice this D data drive that has 460 gb of storage space is not being used. So I put docs in there and I notice that when I make changes to the docs, those changes are not reflected in the docs that are in the D Drive.
Also, apparently, some of my docs went into the one drive cloud and it immediately notified me that I am out of storage and won't let me save the docs' changes - nor will it allow me to move the docs that ended up in the one drive (cloud).

what is going on here? I thought I bought a computer with a huge amount of storage and I've worked on this thing for ten minutes and I can't save anything ......

A few questions:

When you say that you put the docs on the D: drive, did you merely COPY them from C: to D: or did you MOVE them from C: to D:?

When you open a doc to work on it, how are doing this? Are you going into the application that you are using to edit the doc and choosing to open a recent doc? Are you browsing to the new location of the doc from within the app and selecting the document? Are you double-clicking the doc in the new location? If you could describe exactly what you are doing that would help greatly.

Also, after you save such a doc, are you able to find the updated version of the doc? Where is it; in the old location?

As for OneDrive if you located OneDrive in the tree on the left side in File Explorer, right-click, and choose properties, how much space does it indicate that it is using?



Likewise, if you right-click on the C: drive and choose properties, what does Windows tell us about the space usage there?



We may need more information, but lets start with this.

thank you for the info. It appears that "documents" is attached to the C drive. So,when I initially moved the docs from my old computer and then dragged into documents, they first filled up the One Drive and then started in on the C drive. I then dragged them from the C drive to the D drive as the D drive is much better. The edits were not showing up in the D drive.

So, I called Dell and had them take everything off the One drive and get rid of the One drive. Then he changed settings so that everything saves to the D drive. What I don't like is that the documents in the D drive are no longer available through clicking on "Documents". I would like to change that.

The documents folder is a "special" folder in Windows; a so-called "Library".

You can change the location that the documents library points to. Take a look at the tutorial linked to below. Basically, all you need to do is add the new location to the library, set it as the default location to save to, and then delete the old location.
