I've had 1809 running well for a while now and have been putting off 1903 as I don't need any surprises! It says of course 1903 is waiting for download and install. Well I've just chosen to not bother with it, but when will it force itself upon me? Is there any rule of thumb now, because things keep changing with 10 so much I can't keep up with it.
You would require a fancy crystal ball to make that determination and I still wouldn't trust it. I also have been enjoying 1809 for almost a year now and decided I want no surprises. I finally installed WAU Manager and have never looked back. It gives me complete control of software and driver updates. Check this tutorial and feel free to ask any questions. Cheers,

Naturally you could disable Windows update... (various 3rd party tools for that) but 1903 is fine provided your PC hardware and software are compatible.
Note that: you can use (and should already be routinely using) disk imaging (Macrium Relfect -free-paid...) so that you can image your current system and try upgrading and see what you think.
That way you have two ways to get back to 1809- 'Go back to the previous build' (within 10 days of upgrading), and if things go haywire, by restoring your Windows disk image.
By contrast, 1909 has a widely reported file explorer search bug - MS tried to change this, but made a bit of a mess of it.
W10 Tweaker, I will try WAU Manager! Looks super good, and I've heard of it but never knew tenforums endorsed it! I tried O&O on one of my laptops and it seems to work well also, but don't remember if it does Updates? I think there is a switch for just about everything in O&O, but WAU Manager looks simpler and more focused on Update Policies!

I don't have an issue with 1909, but I'm always the holdout, and don't want issues as most. I would say my hardware is all compatible Dell Insprion 3847, though there was a wait on one of the versions not long ago, then it finally came through.
I do images, but honestly, this is my second machine so it don't get the more frequent as my main machine does. I'll do more asap! Good point, I could go back if needed. I am quite confident that all will go well, but don't want to get caught in the middle of working to have 10 come through on me

I should add, I have my Active Hours set to something like 7am to 2am so that the pc is not Restarting for the whole allowed 18hrs...if that matters. This means the pc is never on during the Restart hours.
I plan to review the latest performance of 1903 and 1909 as the end of service for 1809 gets closer. I just don't see any reason to rush ahead based on how it might function for Tom, Dick or Harry's PC when I have no complaints about 1809. I'll likely wait to the bitter end, it's not like my PC will quit on May 12, 2020.

You can of course keep any given build as long as you like- and download its iso if needed provided you disable WU. If you survived Y2k, May 12 2020 is unlikely to be worse.
If you disable Windows Update, the lifecycle is somewhat irrelevant to you.
LOL, Y2K was a HOOT! I vividly recall many of the semi-technical managers getting majorly stressed.
One huge bonus was one of these semi-technical managers facilitated the purchase of a full blown auto-start standby generator that could have powered a site twice the size of this administrative building and Cable secondary Headend.
