Yes, >30Gb free, say- Windows.old will be created- that's about as big as Windows is now.

Just some odd observations from setupact.log
CONX Failed to add driver ....motfilt.sys - appears to be related to some Motorola program. Suggest you investigate and uninstall that

motoandroid.sys - another motorola related program- maybe connected with a Motorola phone somehow?
    - looks like some Motorola program is incompatible - more moto refs. exist.

    lgvzandnetbus64.sys:
What is LG VZW United Drivers?

This is the software package that includes the required drivers, configuration and management utilities to support the LG VZW.
    An LG driver?
LG VZW United Drivers by LG Electronics - Should I Remove It?

kpvnmbze.sys - Google- no results. Rt click, properties, identify it and deal with the relevant program

That's just 3 ideas on things to remove...
I found 200+ mb of motorola-related files like the ones you pointed out within Program Files/Common Files/Motorola Shared folder. I did used to have a Razr Maxx HD phone but haven't had that in like 3 years. I have no Motorola applications installed. These common files were probably left over, orphaned. Is it safe to delete them out of Common Files folder?

I had an LG Verizon (VZW) phone but got rid of that too. Should I keep those files? I also have LG Mobile Drivers under my Programs list but I do still have an AT&T LG phone as a backup.

I did a file search for that kpvnmbze.sys file and can't find it. I have no idea what that is.

I was able to locate a version on the board because I actually saved the box it came in, and on the serial label it is indeed 1.1 Speccy and other ID applications only show it as x.x But I cannot run any of the files in the bios download because I get an error saying it is not compatible with the 64 bit version of Windows.

Well then it sounds like we have a very good idea why the upgrade didn't go? At the time I tried it, there was roughly 11gb or so free. In the process of these tests & utilities somehow now I have 24gb free. I was able to locate some video cache files from editing with Premiere and some other larger leftover files that I was able to purge. My User folder under C:/Users/* has a total size of around 20gb so moving that off to the other drive would give me around 45gb free in order to attempt an upgrade...

Another large file is the Windows Update data store. I've got a ton of updates on here...6 years worth. But if Windows 10 is to be installed, would I really need to save all the windows 7 update files? The winsxs folder is at 19.5gb. There is a Disk Cleanup Wizard Addon available from Microsoft that lets users delete outdated windows updates on win7 SP1...maybe I should get that and try to get rid of some of them?

Once you have created > 30 GB free space other troubleshooting steps can be performed.

Windows automatically deletes memory.dmp files when free disk space is < 25 GB.
Memory dumps may be needed when troubleshooting the BSOD.

Considering this, maybe the best idea is to get a new, bigger drive. Even if we do get the upgrade working, I'm always going to be within 10-15gb of full in the best case scenario. When working on videos I've actually had it down to 1gb free space. So if it crashes I'm not going to have memory dump logs for diagnosis. I really wanted to avoid reinstalling everything though. Also, there are apparently leftover drivers from Motorola and who knows what else is orphaned when windows doesn't delete when I uninstall applications.

I suppose maybe I could try moving the big folder out, then try an install, if that doesn't work then move it back to its original location and get a new drive OR try a clean install of it, not keeping any of my stuff.

If I make an image of C:, could I later make a new partition on D: (which has a terabyte of free space), install the image there and make it dual-boot so I could go into Win7 and copy some application settings and stuff and then eventually purge it.

I want to check the memory first to see if I need new ram; if I'm going to open it up to replace a drive I might as well do anything else in there that needs it. I will try and leave memtest on while I'm at work today.
