Windows Update Fails with 0x80070005 after upgrading Win7 to Win10?

I have an older machine that I had kept on Windows 7 and I have just done an upgrade to Windows 10 1909 using the media creation tool. It seems to work perfectly fine, but Windows Update cannot run and always throws Error Code 0x80070005. I've read up on this and some suggestions are to use subinacl.exe to fix registry permissions on the trusted installer or other registry entries.

I've tried to do that, but I'm running into a RegSetKeySecurity System Error 5 Access is Denied when trying to execute the following:

I've also tried sfc scannow and DISM repair with no success. Also have cleared out the Software Distribution folder and checked all the windows update services to make sure they are running/starting and that has had no effect either.

Any suggestion on how get the above script to work, or other ideas to get the updates working, would be much appreciated.

It has helped some people when other things haven't. Just search for the tool- observe its cautious approach, following the directions. Try just repair 16.

Thanks. I ran step 16 and then restarted and still got the same error. I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it did give some options (which it was finding nothing wrong before using the Tweaking.com tool). However, after it applied the fixes and I rebooted I still got the same error. I ran the update troubleshooter a 2nd time and it couldn't find anything wrong.



I've tried to uninstall the last update with no success. If I try to manually install the updates they appear to install, but then Windows Update still thinks they need to be installed and issues the same error code.

I'm really stumped as to how to fix this. Everything seems to be working just fine after the upgrade except for Windows Updates so I really don't want to have to Reset/Reinstall and then reconfigure this entire system just because of this one issue.

I sort of misspoke on the 'older PC' comment. It's an Ivy Bridge system, but the system drive was cloned/replaced with a Western Digital SSD last year. So the architecture is a few years old, but the drive is new.

I've already run scandisk checks and there are no errors. No errors with HD Tune either. I then tried the script you linked and rebooted and still get the same error.

The Microsoft Store *also* has errors and can't update either.

Sadly I'm still stumped by this problem. I performed an in-place upgrade and it didn't resolve the problem.
