There was a thread in TF in which 32x > 64x was done without clean install.
It may have been an upgrade too.

Macrium was used to make a backup image.
    32x was changed to 64x.
    The image was restored.

Maybe a trial and error step?

I'd like to see that link.

I suspect that someone was fooling himself. (20th century American English. Sorry.)

Possibly 32 bits too far. (himself? don't you have to say 'themselves' these days - unless it's a quotation, I suppose... )

"Themselves" seems to be the generally accepted version these days. It may even be used when the gender of the (singular) person referred to is known. Back in the evil 20th, "himself" was used for both males and indeterminate genders. I'm having trouble switching to a plural to avoid the issue. (I keep reminding myself that "your" may be singular or plural.)

Imagine how I feel about the "them", for singular gender fluid individuals.

And I had real trouble when a niece's husband transitioned to "Veronica". (Ronnie for short. As a Monty Python fan I would have suggested Loretta.) My pronouns were completely out of control. They have since divorced, and Ronnie is remarried - to a woman.

OK, I purchased another Windows 7 license, activated it and then upgraded to Windows 10 using the upgrade tool. All seems well so far. I guess all my worrying was for nothing? Time will tell.

Why did you purchase another Windows 7 license?

It was cheap, fast and easy and I knew the system 10 upgrade uses the same 7 key based on my experience of upgrading another system 7 computer last week. I also figured if Windows 10 didn't work on the machine, I'd at least have an activated version of Windows 7 I could use on it.
