    Differences between MS upgrading tools?

This is a desktop installation. Currently, release 1903 18632.535 build is installed and want to upgrade to 1909, but retain the installed software.

MS offered two tools, which I downloaded MediaCreationTool1909.exe (18mb) and Windows10Upgrade9252.exe (6mb ) to the Desktop.

For 30 minutes the MediaCreationTool tried and failed to install the upgrade due to some basic error. So, I created an USB installation drive just in case.

Before trying Windows10Upgrade9252 I wondered what is the difference? I have several 1903 macrium mirrors in case of a failure due damage, so my loss is working time.

Windows10Upgrade9252 checks for compatibility of the system and the media creation tool seems to check the version of . windows 10 and then upgrade.

Let's Install 1903! Windows 10, May 2019 Update Now Available

Sometime antivirus software prevents the full upgrade to take place so try disabling your antivirus software and try the upgrade again.

Im assuming this is paid software your concerned about?

Some paid software you can deactivate and then reactivate the software.

The difference is that after installing the MCT/Media Creation Tool gets to the page for the full version download as either an .iso file used to create an exact copy of the original DVD disc and also can be used to create a Bootable USB Thumb drive to install Win10, usually the latest Version but not fully-up-to-date on the Builds.

The other thing gets only the updates or maybe in some cases do the Upgrade based upon what is installed on the computer.

The Windows10Upgrade9252.exe is the Upgrade Assistant. It basically works the same way as the 'upgrade this PC now' option in the Media Creation Tool. Both will download the install files when run, checking for updates while doing so. The main difference is that the MCT will the proceed direct to the upgrade, while the Upgrade Assist will, as I understand it, ask you to schedule a time for the upgrade.

Having used the MCT to make the install USB you now have a third option. Run the Setup.exe you'll find on the root of the usb drive to start an in-place upgrade.

As you had problems before, it may help if you turn of checking for updates during the upgrade. See Step 8 in this tutorial.

@quicksilverstud, Thanks for the info about the 9252. I will try it now. Your comment about "paid software" is unclear. Data is stored on other drives, and if something is forgotten, it exists in the Macrium mirror. I only use the Windows Antivirus and Defender, and my only concern is wasting hours of my time with reinstall. Besides I want to know more about the 1st installation failure, which I failed to record.

Thanks for the link to the repair while upgrade. I meet every criteria except starting the the USB Setup.exe from Windows. Earlier, I booted the USB.

Booting from the usb is for starting a clean install. To start an upgrade run Setup while booted to your current Windows.

Yes, that's what I said. In the meanwhile, 9252 installed 1909 successfully on the desktop and I don't expect any problems. Now I am in the process of upgrading the laptop as well. Thanks.

Some people feel they can lose the software they paid for like camtasia, adobe premiere ect. Upgrade is in place while the computer is on and booted to desktop. Like bree mentioned, booting from a usb is for clean installs and you have to use one of the upgrade programs to upgrade and you cant use the usb for upgrade like you could with previous versions of windows

Thanks. I don't have such sophisticated software. My three paid software is Windows 10, Microsoft Access 2007 and Textpad. The rest are all freeware utilities.
