You may not believe it, but I'm the one it's happening to. I have already tried to re-install 8.1 (with assistance) and was unable to do so. It simply tells me to please install external memory and select okay despite the fact that I have the "external memory" (i.e. the USB Flash Drive) plugged in. It will not go beyond that state anymore. Also, again, I have not been doing any of this on my own - it has been guided either by MS, Staples, or ASUS themselves.
One of them saw it in person, my dad took it down the store. The only ones who did not see it in person were MS and ASUS but they both ran us through attempts to fix or to re-install 8.1 via flash drive. All three deemed it unfixable. Staples however is the one that called it an empty box.
Via one single flash drive. What if that one single flash drive is bad? It won't cost you anything to try post #18 except for a different flash drive because the one single one you have tried might be bad.
All we are trying to do here is keep you from throwing away a $100 netbook that most of us can probably save in a couple hours in our living rooms.
We literally do not have one in this area. I do not have a license nor a working vehicle of my own. I live in an area that is referred to as "upcountry" - Nothing can be walked to and the nearest stores are half an hour away by car. But, again, we do not have a local computer shop. We have Staples. I have a few personal friends who work there and have been able to fix issues for me in the past. I would actually go to them outside of work too if I needed help with something concerning the older laptop I used to have.
There is no way for me to go and find one. We do not have one in this county, period.
