Unable to install windows onto new SSD

Hello. I have been trying to install windows to my brand-new SSD for 4-5 days now. I installed Ubuntu onto it first, since I plan on having a dual-boot system. (Which I've done before)

The first issue is that the Windows Media Creation Tool keeps failing to download/burn to my USB. It give this error:

Because of that error, I thought maybe my USB was faulty, since it was acting strange anyway. So I bought a new USB only to find that the same thing happened. To work around all of this I opted to manually download the ISO from Microsoft's site and burn it to my USB using Rufus. That at least allowed me to boot to the USB using UEFI. I went through the installation as normal and choose the custom install since I want to install alongside my newly installed Ubuntu. In the drive list, I tried to create a partition using the remaining free space leftover, but it gave an error. Additionally, it gave an error at the bottom saying that it cannot install to this disk because it is MBR. (Even though I think I have installed to MBR before?)

Here are screenshots of all of this:

I also tried using the tool to burn it to a DVD instead. It did download the ISO, but then I had to use the generic windows ISO burner to burn it to the disc. I was able to boot to the disc and even start installing Windows, but it got stuck at 95% of "Preparing files for installation" everytime. I gave it plenty of time, even letting it try to install overnight.

I can provide any information needed. I'm all out of ideas as this point. I've done clean installs of Windows **and** various linux distros multiple times, but this is the first time this has been a problem.

That's a general dual-boot tutorial which assumes Windows is already installed. That's somewhat the inverse of my situation. Also, I know how to set-up a dual-boot generally, as I've done that before.

Might be easier (and quicker) to start over, do a clean install of Windows 10. Once that's done, resize the partitions Windows 10 is installed in to make room for Ubuntu and continue. Clean Install means deleting all existing partitions on the drive then letting the Win 10 installer install to a unallocated drive.

That's OK, it was relatively easy to decode. Your last image: https://i.imgur.com/GzYoL4f.jpg is the key to why you cannot install.

It says the drive is formatted as MBR, but you have booted from the install usb in UEFI mode. The usb from the MCT can boot in either UEFI or Legacy mode, but can only install a system in the same mode as you have booted the install media. The one-time boot menu that you can get at startup by pressing a function key (often F12) will list the usb twice if it is capable of booting in both Legacy and UEFI.

Because you have booted the usb in UEFI mode it requires a GPT formatted drive to install to. If you boot the usb in Legacy mode you would be able to install to this MBR drive.

Maybe, yeah. Kind of annoying because I did configure and set-up my Ubuntu already.

But how would I go about clearing the drive to start over? I suppose I'd have to boot into something that can do it from a USB or CD.

Bree nailed it, you'll be fine once you follow his directions.

Good to know. thing is however, my pc will only boot to the USB in UEFI mode. If I try legacy (I assume it's legacy, but doesn't explicitly say it is legacy) then it tells me that this USB can only boot in UEFI, thus the reason I booted it in UEFI in the first place.

Is that because I chose GPT within Rufus when I burned the ISO? That would make sense to me, in hindsight.

I think so too. I'm going to pursue that direction, but thanks for your advice too!
