upgrading to win 10 from win 7 with relocated user directory

    I am currently running Win 7 SP1.

When I installed my windows 7 a few years back, I moved my user directory to a different partition, using the method outlined here:

User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation - Windows 7 Help Forums

My question is, will I be able to upgrade to win 10 with my current configuration? And if I upgrade to win 10, will it keep my current configuration?

Why not do a backup of your current install with Macrium Reflect Free and try the upgrade?

It will move your 7 install to windows.old and create a proper user folder on C:/. Windows 10 has come a long way from how archaic 7 was. A lot of elder programs and hardware that you have been using with 7 may not run prope so beware.

Personally I opt for a clean install when doing a major Windows upgrade like this. It solves a lot of headaches. Install 10 as the upgrade on 7, then after you do the setup with a Windows Live account, wipe and do a fresh install of 10 to get rid od any headaches and cobwebs from 7.

So having the user directory on a separate partition will not make me ineligible for win 10 upgrade? Thanks.

What about my data? Do I have to backup them too? I have two old ntfs-formatted harddrives that I still wanna use and there are lots of files on them, can win 10 read them as they are?
