    Dual boot - Windows 10 - Ubuntu - ACHI issues


    Hello

    I'm trying to dual-boot a new Acer laptop which already has Windows 10 on, adding Ubuntu. To install Ubuntu I need to change the SATA mode to ACHI. Windows does not boot when ACHI is used (No Bootable Device identified).

    Here are the things I've already tried:
    - Re-boot in safe mode, change UEFI setting to ACHI, let windows install ACHI driver and then reboot (the method you find everywhere). -> This did not work, Safe mode does not boot when ACHI setting is on.
    - Change the registry DWORD(s) files to 0 (3 of them iaStorV, iaStorAVC and storahci) and rebooted, changed to AHCI. -> This did not work, I get the same 'No Bootable Device' message.
    - A combination of these two approaches -> it did not work either.

    Note I've not installed Ubuntu yet but I have created the partition.

    Can someone advise on what else I can try?

    Did you changed the the UEFI BIOS settings from RAID to AHCI ?

    Yes, in all manipulations I tried I changed the UEFI BIOS settings to AHCI. Windows does not boot after that., safe mode on or not.

    You have to boot into windows, change to AHCI in windows settings, shutdown, change BIOS to AHCI then boot.

    Isn’t that what I do when I modify the registry? (Second dash in my first message)

    Is there another way to do this?

    I believe to go from RAID to AHCI you have to reinstall the OS. Have you tried deleting the RAID drivers/software in device manager before rebooting into UEFI settings?

    Years ago I changed from RAID to AHCI but don't remember what I did. But yes, it's possible.

    Thanks! I might give it a try; a bit edgy about deleting the RAID drivers though so will have to read about it first

    A few weeks ago I had to reinstall Win10 Insider Preview but didn't think about the 2 HDDs in the box. Win10 picked up the setting in the BIOS that was RAID/AHCI and automatically set up RAID. Later I decided to remove the second/D: drive and Windows wouldn't reboot, ended up with a single drive, second drive gone and a clean install of Win10. It seems that Win10 can be too smart for its own good sometimes.

    sid arp, did you disabled fast boot? Fast boot loads a hibernation file so it can be that it's preventing a clean boot.
