    Can't update Windows 10 1803

I have an older laptop that I use only once a month at most. I thought I'd updated it to either 1903 or 1909 this past summer but maybe I'm mistaken as it says it is now sitting at 1803. I went to Settings/Updates and it says "Error encountered. Last checked 2019-05-21. Your device is missing important security and quality fixes".

I tried looking for updates but that failed with error code 0x8008008.

I have no idea what to do about that. Can someone suggest a solution?

Also, to what level should I update it at this point?

Try running the Windows Update troubleshooter. You'll find it in Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

I followed your advice, Bree, and the troubleshooter advised me to reboot. I did that and after the reboot, Windows Update was error free. I was still at 1803 but this time it found some updates. I installed them, checked again, found more updates, installed them, rinse and repeat a few times. Now, it's found the update for 1903 and is starting to download it. It looks like I'm out of the weeds now. Thanks for your help!

That depends. The current latest build is 1903. 1909 (a CU not a feature update this time) is expected 'soon'.
It seems your PC may not have been offered 1809 or 1903 - if that's so, it might not be compatible.
Thank you for answering the other part of my original question. (I hadn't seen your answer before essentially re-asking it below.) At least I know what all of the later versions are now. I thought Windows might be on an update with a number greater than 1909 by now....

Follow this tutorial to use the Update Assistant to perform the update: Download Windows 10

If you have problems with that, click on the 2nd choice, Download tool now to get the Media Creation Tool, follow directions.

I just upgraded an old 2006 PC to v1903 yesterday. The PC hadn't been used for a while and had to plough through all the updates for v1809 before the v1903 update was offered via Windows Update
