At last - updated from 1803 to 1903

On and off for the last couple of months I've been trying to update from 1803 to 1903. I've never been offered this update so downloaded the Media Creation Tool to try and do it manually. Everytime I ran it, it would tell me my PC is ok for it but then it would fail at the last moment.

I've been through many posts about possible solutions such as removing all unnecessary hardware but none of them would allow it to go through.

My OS is on an SSD which was cloned from an HDD not so long ago, so I put the HDD back in and booted from it and sure enough the 1903 update went through successfully. The HDD has all the same programs on it but Win10 was still at 1511. One difference I noticed apart from the main partition size being bigger was that the recovery paritition was also larger at 547Mbytes. On the SSD the recovery partition was 450Mbytes.

I increased the recovery partition size on the SSD to 737MBytes and lo and behold the 1903 update went through.

So for me the recovery partition was too small to allow the update, making it bigger worked.

That is one thing that can cause a problem. Windows is supposed to have the ability to shrink C: and increase the size of the Recovery partition- but only if the latter is after C: - which it isn't by default.

If your disk was full, I guess it wouldn't have been able to add a new Recovery partition after C: - which is another thing that happens if there is space and the existing Recovery partition is too small.

Actually the recovery partition was after C on my SSD but Windows never increased the size.

Thanks for clarifying that. I can't understand why the Recovery partition is created first anyway.

Unfortunate indeed if the stated intent (of increasing the size) is not implemented robustly and causes problems not clearly indicated to the user.
