Whether you are online or not, I would always recommend setting up as Local Account first.

When you set up a MS account it takes the first 5 characters of you email address and uses that for the name of your use folder. If you set up a Local Account the name of you user folder will be the same as the name you choose for your account.

You can always switch a local account to a MS account later, after you are sure it is set up and working as you would like, in particular, whether the WiFi is working.

A local account is an option.
    It is not required.

Okay so i assume its create a new account.

On the new pag it says lets create your account

    Enter your email

But i don't have an email right?

    Other option is

    use phone number instead

    get a new email address

Which is the new local account option? Also the email address has to end with @Microsoft.com right? Like im not putting in my gmail or yahoo or say creating a new gmail or yahoo email for this right?

Microsoft hide the option at the bottom left of that screen.

See Step 24 in this tutorial.

Upgrade Old Slow Windows 7 Laptop?

I currently use a windows 10 pro dell xps 15 9550 laptop. This is my main laptop. I just did a windows 7 to windows 10 update on an old dell desktop that i have not used in a long time. Its just sitting there so i figure i update it anyways if i use it in the future.

A family member has an old laptop that they rarely use or use sometimes. Its also a dell laptop, its one of those dell inspiron from a long time ago. It is not only slow... but charger doesn't even charge it well... battery is bad... its extremely slow and that is putting it lightly...

Should i upgrade that laptop from windows 7 to windows 10? They do have important files there and thus i don't want to ask them to back up it up as it would take them some time. But then i read if you don't update it soon to windows 10, you cannot do this anymore. But they do seem to use the laptop a few times like say print or put some pictures there etc. Now i read if you don't update to windows 10, you can no longer do that. So would you suggest i do that to that laptop? I will say that laptop is not only slow... but it might even have viruses etc. They no longer use that laptop and use a mac. But that laptop they do put things there etc.

Has anyone did this windows 7 to windows 10 upgrade and then it wiped everything out? I read always do backup of files there in case.

The thing is when i did the windows 7 to windows 10 upgrade on my old dell desktop, i wanted nothing installed and did that. But for this laptop, well they still use it a few times. But if they don't update it before the date, would that mean their windows 7 laptop computer would be useless since no more updates?

Yes, you can Upgrade to Win10 IF you download the MCT/Media Creation Tool, install it then follow the prompts to download the .iso file to use in creating the DVD used to install from. Be sure to get the x86/32-bit or x64/64-bit according to what is already installed. Then put the DVD in the drive and when Windows Explorer [renamed to File Explorer in later versions] opens find the setup.exe file and run it. Choose the upgrade and you shouldn't lose anything but as in all things computerish be sure to back up or save anything not wanting to be lost.

And there will be other choices so beware. If wanting a truly clean install boot to the DVD instead.

If they have important files, then they should backup to an External drive, no matter how long it takes.Everyone should have a good backup before preceding with any troubleshooting, or upgrading.
When you upgrade from Windows 7 to 10, it tries to keep your files, in most cases it works. But there is never a 100% guarantee.
If the computer is slow, Right click Computer and choose Properties. See how much RAM it has, if it has less then 4GB, that could be a reason for some of the slowness.
Also, run a Hard Drive Diagnostic scan on the drive to see if it is in good Health. Download HD Tune, not Pro, and go to Error Scan tab and run a full Error Scan, not a Quick Scan. This will take a long time. If all the boxes are Green, then the health of that drive is good and will easily upgrade to Windows 10. If any boxes turn Red then the HDD is beginning to fail, and it is not worth upgrading this computer without first upgrading to a new HDD or SSD. The best way to upgrade an old PC is to add more RAM and convert to an SSD drive. But it it's really old, you probably should invest your money in a newer computer rather then on this laptop.

@Berton, the OP has just successfully upgraded one W7 machine by following Brink's tutorial. He recommends downloading the MCT, then using it's Upgrade this PC now option rather than making an ISO.

It's probably best not to ask them to back up their files themselves, they may miss something important. By far the best backup is for you to make a system image of the whole machine with Macrium Reflect Free. Not only can you recover files from this backup image, but if the whole upgrade process goes horribly wrong you can restore the system image and put the machine back to exactly how it was when you made the image.

Whether it is worth upgrading it to Windows 10 is another matter, it depends very much on what CPU and RAM it has. The upgrade will be 32-bit W10 if the W7 it has is 32-bit. At a bare minimum that needs a dual core cpu and 2GB RAM for that to run adequately (MS say 32-bit W10 can run in 1GB RAM, but that's probably going to feel more like walking than running).

Which exact model of Dell Inspiron is it? We could look up the specs and make an educated guess as to how it will perform.
