From the News section here, which you're free to read. There's a thread per update per build with a list of issues, download links, and user experience comments following.

will it erase all the setting changes I have made since first ran the computer
It depends what the changes are. Services will be set to default and all system files replaced. The principle is to restore windows to an operational state- effectively a useful periodic repair. You will get a new set of drivers.

    If you have changed
    - system resources
    - made certain changes in the registry

these, for example, may well be overwritten.

Where you basically 'hack' the OS (make non-GUI changes), keep aside a list and means of redoing such changes after any upgrade to make this quick and easy.

how long will it take to upgrade itself?
There's a long thread discussing this. 1hr to several hours in some cases, say. And if it doesn't succeed, could take several attempts and problem solving.

As ever, make sure you have a current disk image before any major change. tenforums tirelessly recommends the routine use of disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid), which gives you a way to restore you PC should things go horribly wrong.

Here's how - with a section on resolving issues with links leading to more ..

Microsoft announced it's safe to start rolling out for businesses so as a home user you should be fine. Take that with a grain of salt. I would upgrade though, there's a hefty amount of security patches included.

You`ll be fine, 1903 works perfectly.

Use the ISO file update method. Don`t use windows update.

Some settings may change, there`s no way around that, but you may not even notice them, if you see something has changed, just put it back how you had it.

Download the ISO file, open it with windows explorer, and click on setup. Make sure you choose to keep your apps and files.

thanks for your suggestions. I already have win 10 installed seems odd one would have to completely reinstall the entire windows program just for updates. glad I dont have a business that has to do this to every computer. btw when I run the update install there will be an option there somewhere to make an ISO thing? what size is that and what do I put it on then?

You can create an iso file for the latest build using the
Microsoft Media Creation tool (e.g. use Google)

    what size is that
Google is great at questions like this:

This is a misconception, conflating a whole range of issues. For most people, all updates and upgrades proceed via Windows Update.

However - you may wish to use an iso file for a variety of reasons:
    a. If your Windows is damaged and you need to do an in-place upgrade repair install (tutorial available)
    b. you have a limited internet connection and need to download the iso on a different PC on a different connection
    c. you have very limited space on your installed disk (some have as little as 32Gb) so you need to download the iso to a different disk
    d. you want the iso to be downloaded once to update multiple PCs
    e. you want to also create a bootable Win 10 disk, capable of some basic repairs - and can be used as a source for an in-place upgrade repair

You do not have to reinstall windows, you just have to update to the latest version if you want.

Just click on the Link I posted and download the ISO file, then open it with windows explorer and click next, it`s that simple. (Make sure you know where the ISO file downloads to, it`s usually in your Downloads folder)

Do not use windows update to install the next version.

Any more questions, just ask before you proceed.
