Hey zbook, I deeply appreciate all the effort you put forward with issue of first computer and that effort has just been amazing with this problem. But itís becoming obvious to me that this is just too far over my head. I think maybe I should just leave this one on win 7 and install an anti-virus/firewall program that will be supported even after next January and because of it's age, replace it after awhile.

I canít thank you enough; youíre truly a very giving person.

    You are welcome.

There are several months before support ends.

You can reopen this post or open a new one.

Opening a thread in Seven Forums is an additional option.

When antivirus software are uninstalled with control panel residual files can be left in the registry.
Most third party antivirus have uninstall software to remove these retained files.

The links posted were for those additional steps.

The seven forum log collector should collect files similar to these:
mini dumps, event viewer, msinfo32, dxdiag, uninstall, install, hosts, drivers, etc.
These logs can be scanned and read to fix underlying problems.

The Panther logs are generated when there are upgrade failures.
    There are multiple logs.
The two most common troubleshooted are setupact and setuperr.
The others are helpful depending upon the phase in which the upgrade fails.

Please reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials and only uninstall when you are ready to upgrade:
