Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 questions

    Hello !

I want to buy windows 10 today. I will upgrade my desktop PC from windows 7. I currently have 2 drives my SSD drive which is drive C: and my hard drive which is baclkup drive E:

If I buy and download and install Windows 10 will it install onto drive c: and leave drive e: alone? Can I put anything I want to save to drive e: and the files will be fine?

Will installing Windows 10 delete everything on drive c:

Thank you so much for any help

Hi, first, if you're happy with the edition of Windows you will get, you should still be able to upgrade for free.

If you wish to clean install using your Windows license, you can do that too.

    Upgrade guide and upgrade paths:

    - includes lots of links for how to find out what went wrong...

A clean install means deleting existing Windows - not data- partitions and installing to unallocated space.

An upgrade install should only affect your system disk.

To perform a clean install you boot from a Win 10 bootable medium.

To upgrade, you log in and then run setup.exe either from a mounted iso file or from the bootable medium.

Otherwise, upgrade is, of course, offered by Windows update.

Data partitions are not affected. However, given that Windows 10 creates some small extra partitions when installing, it is much the safest to only have your system disk connected. It is possible in some scenarios that a Win 10 partition may be created in empty space on a different drive.

To add about disconnecting the second drive, the BIOS may have a setting for RAID/AHCI which can allow Win10 to put part of itself on both drives and removal or failure of the second drive will prevent booting [ran into just that a couple weeks ago].

    Hi,
Remove any additional hdd/ ssd's if the data on it is important to you before mounting the 10 iso for inplace upgrade or clean installing.
