Unable to Update Windows 10 to Feature Update , Version 1903

I have been having problem updating the Windows 10 Home to version 1903, after several attempts.

    1. Using Windows Update I tried updating to 1903 number of time and it resulted in error 0x80070070, though i have around 9GB before proceeding to installation and used a external storage USB drive with 16GB free space.
    2. I ran CHKDSK and it found and fixed errors.

    3. Ran DISM tool and showed no corruption.

    4. Ran Windows Troubleshooter.

    5. I since have tried using Windows 10 Update Assistant or Windows Update, it downloads the update and when it starts to apply update it doesn't move become 0% and it rollbacks. The error which shows up is 0x80070070.

I am using Teclast Tbook 10 ID:E8N8, Processor : Intel Atom x5-Z8300 CPU@1.44GHz with Installed RAM: 4GB with Windows 10 Home, Version 1803 and OS Build: 17134.1006

Help in this would be welcomed.

As Samuria posted this error code is typically seen when there is insufficient space.

There can be other error codes that appear after fixing space problems.

When performing Windows upgrades that have upgrade problems it is better to perform upgrades using a windows 10 iso to get a more elaborate error code.

    0xC190020e
    0x80070070 - 0x50011
    0x80070070 - 0x50012
    0x80070070 - 0x60000

These errors indicate the computer does not have enough free space available to install the upgrade.
To upgrade a computer to Windows 10, it requires 16 GB of free hard drive space for a 32-bit OS, and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS. If there is not enough space, attempt to free up drive space before proceeding with the upgrade.

Note: If your device allows it, you can use an external USB drive for the upgrade process.
Windows setup will back up the previous version of Windows to a USB external drive.
The external drive must be at least 8GB (16GB is recommended).
The external drive should be formatted using NTFS.
Drives that are formatted in FAT32 may run into errors due to FAT32 file size limitations.
USB drives are preferred over SD cards because drivers for SD cards are not migrated if the device does not support Connected Standby.

    Upgrade checklist:

    Code:
    UPGRADE CHECK LIST:
Run through this check list before the next upgrade attempt:

    1) remove nonessential hardware
    docks
    USB devices
    printers
    headset
    speakers
    joysticks
    projectors
    scanners
    plotters
    portable optical drives (CD, DVD)
    microphones
    cameras
    webcams
    smartphones
    bluetooth devices
USB drives (other than a windows 10 iso if used for the upgrade)
USB Wireless Mouse or Keyboard Receiver, USB Wireless Network Card
    secondary monitors

    2) These should be the only attached devices:
    wired mouse
    wired keyboard
    monitor

Any of these that have been done in the past week are not necessary to repeat:

    3) open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste: (repair file system)
    chkdsk /r /v
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight
Find the chkdsk report in the event viewer using the information in this link and post into the thread:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/40822-read-chkdsk-log-event-viewer-windows-10-a.html

    4) open administrative command prompt and copy and paste: (repair operating system)
    sfc /scannow
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    5) update windows (have all recommended updates installed) and reboot after updates

    6) List and uninstall all non-Microsoft antivirus software
(This includes always on and manual software.)
(This includes running the applicable antivirus uninstall tools for any AV that could have been incompletely uninstalled)

    7) List and uninstall all non-Microsoft firewall software

    8) List all Microsoft and non-Microsoft drive encryption software.
Uninstall all non-Microsoft disk encryption software

If the drive is encrypted and installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation > decrypt the drive
    https://www.ghacks.net/2015/11/19/fix-the-instalboot-operation/

    9) Run disk cleanup to clean temporary and system files

    10) Verify that the drive has > 30 GB free space (At least 25 GB is needed for creating dumps)

    11) Place the computer in clean boot:

    12) Detach all SATA devices other than the disk drive that has the Windows operating system
(Make sure that the only disk drive that is attached to the computer at the time of the upgrade attempt is the disk drive containing Windows)
(Other disk drives may be able to be detached by disconnecting cables or if necessary to remove the drive from the computer)

    13) Make sure that there is no metered connection: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17452/windows-metered-internet-connections-faq

after making sure you have plenty of hard drive space to upgrade to the 1903 edition, try again, if it wont work, then maybe a refresh upgrade might help; this will take a while to do, as you're downloading a full ISO of the 1903 edition, but there's two ways of doing this

#1: Use the Media Creation Tool to upgrade your 1803 windows 10 to 1903 by two given options: "In-place Upgrade" which downloads all the needed windows 10 files then gives you the choice on how you want to do this refresh upgrade

#2: Go to the techbench website and select windows (final) for type, "windows 10 version 1903" as the version, windows 10 as edition, selecting whichever language is your preferred choice, and either the 32-bit iso or 64-bit iso as the final choice, then just save to desktop, and mount the iso file and run the setup and do how you want to do

just one question on this: is this a tablet, or a laptop, as im having a bit of a problem distinguishing between the two; mainly if its a laptop, I highly recommend you upgrade the ram to more than 4 GB for the 64-bit option, or stick with what you got for the 32-bit option

I will be following your steps #1 & #2 as suggested and update you on the results.

Regarding the last points about the device. It's a dual booting tablet with Android and Windows 10 Home installed in it, so the possibilities of upgrading the memory on it is quite limited. It do support adding of TF card (SD card) and external storage device via Micro USB which I am using to extent the storage space required for performing the update. It came preinstalled with Windows 10 Home 64-bit version.

Thanks for taking your time to suggest.

    1) There are two major problems blocking Windows upgrades:
    a) insufficient drive free space
    b) BSOD

Once these problems are fixed you can attempt another upgrade.
If it upgrades you are set.
If it fails to upgrade new error codes and messages as well as log scanning may find other causes of the failure to uprade.

    2) The free space displayed was 8 -9 GB.

3)The logs collected data beginning 9/15/2019

4)During the ten day period there were eight BSOD.
The first was on 9/17 and the last on 9/23.

    5) Increase the free space on the C: drive.
Consider modifying partition size for the upgrade so that there is 35 GB free.
Performance is optimal when there is 15% or more free space and this can be modified after a successful upgrade.

    Code:
DriveLetter Size (GB) Free (GB) Device Path
    ----------- --------- --------- -----------
    C: 34.96 8.88 \Device\HarddiskVolume13

     Free Space: 9.1 GB
