Cannot update PC from build 1803

I've been trying to unsuccessfully update my ASUS PC from the build 1803 for a while now. Tried everything I could find on the internet and the update was failing every time somewhere around 81-84%. I attempted to do it probably 20-30 times so I quit, after all it is still working and I can do everything that I need.

Now 1803 build is finishing its service live and my PC is attempting to download and install build 1903. By now there were probably another 20 attempts to install 1903 and every time there is the same story - it takes 3-4 hours, update is coming to about the same 81% and the computer freezes. I am turning it off, then on and it starts to undo the charges restoring the previous version.

At this point I looked at every way to stop updating it at all, I can live with the computer the way it is, but none of my attempts to stop updates worked as well. I think I tried, again, everything that I could google anywhere, and no success. Now, every 3-4 days the PC is starting to update by itself and after the same 3-4 hours everything is back to where I was. I cannot stop this cycle.

It currently reads Windows 10 (Home), build 1803 (OS Build 17134.950).

Is there a way to somehow solve this situation, please? I would be obviously happy to have a running build 1903 or alternatively I would use PC the way it is now without the annoying and useless for me updates at all. I might be wrong but I think I tried everything published in multiple places solutions and nothing worked, unless there is some computer magic available.

I was thinking that if possible, maybe there is an executable image of Windows 10 build 1903 that I could install and hopefully it would solve the problem. Other than that, I don't even know what else to try. As a minimum I need to stop annoying and useless for me Windows updates altogether. It will run for a couple more years the way it is, hopefully.

    Thank you for any help.

Hi, first to get control of your PC given this profoundly irritating behaviour where a failed upgrade is repeated indefinitely see
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

MS made it progressively harder to disable Windows update by simple means, and especially so given its policy of offering upgrades to compatible systems nearing end of life (see article in News section).

You don't mention any error message, but there should be some log files. See the relevant section here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...sion-of-window

However, before looking at the detail, some basic checks are needed.
    a. Check your disk
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (incl SSDs) gives the best summary I know and finds things others don't
    Otherwise
HD Tune (free) Health and Error Scan tabs

    b. If ok, from an admin command or Powershell prompt:
    chkdsk c: /scan
    - this checks only

    c.If ok, similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

    d. If ok or fixed, then please post a full screenshot of your partitions using
Minitool Partition Wizard (not Disk Management)
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post

    e. How much free space do you have on C: ? Allow at least 30Gb

    f. Using the Microsoft Media Creation tool (Google) download a build 1903 iso file.

    g. Prepare for an upgrade attempt:
    - perform a clean boot (Google if unsure)
    - disconnect any unnecessary peripherals
    - uninstall any extra security software or things that modify the GUI

    h. Boot normally
    i. Disconnect the internet
    j. Rt click an Mount the iso file
(Mount will not be available if you have associated iso's with another program)
    k. Open the new drive letter created
    l. Double click setup.exe
    m. During the attempt, choose NOT to accept updates as part of the upgrade. This simplifies and accelerates it, reducing the chance of failure.

    n. If it fails, carefully record any error message, and zip and upload log files (see link above).

    o. Complete your system specs (see mine for comparison - click My Computer).

There are many reasons for possible failure:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...pgrade-process
This section, where links take you to numerous articles with further links, may help you to identify error numbers and messages, as may Google. However, quite often there seems no correlation between messages and reality.

    Hi,
Yep post a disk management screen shot or one using free mini tool so we might get a better idea of what the disk looks like
You might have too many partitions or something like that messing with the installer...

TrashZone, thank you for your input.

dalchina, so I started to work on your list. A and B did not find anything wrong but while performing step C (SFC /SCANNOW) I received a screen informing me of corrupt files, I attached a screenshot here.

I looked through a log file - it is large, about 10 megs and there are thousands of lines there, so I am a bit confused of what to do with it.

Maybe it is a wrong idea but if I can download and install a clean build 1903, maybe it will automatically fix all the corrupt files in Windows as I am completely wiping everything out per my understanding? Or do I need to look through the log, find each corrupt file and work with it individually? What if there are hundreds of them? I've never dealt with it so sorry if my questions are too naive.

Use Kyhi's Image Health to fix SFC problems. Usually works.

SFC Scannow and Dism RestoreHealth - Image Health - Repair Corrupt Files
Here is a program to help users with corrupt windows files..
This program will run System File Checker and DISM commands to repair an online Windows image
and will also look for the setup media to use as a repair source

Thank you Ztruker. I did what you said and the report at the end of the process said that 1 file was replaced or added, I don't remember now.

Then I ran SFC /SCANNOW again and the message at the end of it did not say that there were any unfixed files left like it was the first time - see attached, so the tool that you suggested worked, thank you again.

So, what should I do now - go for Minitool Partition Wizard as was suggested above or just try to update to build 1903 again? As always another update is pending so it is ready to go. Since some corrupt files were fixed, maybe that is all that was needed, hopefully?

Or, if installing iso file of 1903 is solving all the problems, maybe the easiest way to deal with all of them at once is just doing a clean install?

There are multiple options for failed Windows upgrades.

a)Troubleshoot to potentially not have to reinstall drivers and applications

    b) Perform a clean install if files are backed up or if there are no files that need to be saved (reinstall drivers, applications, and files)

    c) Perform a reset save files if files are not backed up (reinstall drivers and applications)

What are the status of the important files?

First make sure you have a current disk image using Macrium reflect e.g. so if anything goes badly wrong you have a way back, and a full backup.

What security software are you using? If Comodo, uninstall it. Otherwise at least disable it.

Then proceed from (d) in my post #2

If it fails, note any error message exactly, and upload log files.

Performing the upgrade that way without updates may give you a better chance- either way, we may get more information.

    Thank you both.

I don't have any critical information on that computer, it is my secondary PC so everything is backed up multiple times.

Later today I will try to update to 1903 again, I am expecting it to fail again, then I will use Macrium to create a new backup and will work on installing a new image of build 1903. For this part I will wait till Friday as I need this PC until the weekend.

    I will post the results.

    Thank all of you again.
