can I use the mct to download an iso for safekeeping and then use it again to do the upgrade?
Yes, I do that each time a new version is released. You run the MCT and ask it to 'make media for another PC', then choose to make an ISO. Later you can mount the ISO by double-clicking on it and start the in-place upgrade by running the Setup.exe you will find on the root of the virtual DVD.

Thanks so much to all of you, Bree, Addram, etc..( sorry if I left anyone out??)!!, this is going to save me till I get a new pc/laptop.

Really hated Windows 10 when I had the free upgrade, and I use it at work and can't stand it compared to Windows 7, but I hate the idea of running Windows 7 without security updates.

Now all I need to do is get a new Office suite as well (sigh)
    thanks again!

    - there are free office suites e.g. Libre Office and more..
    - you can have lots of Win 7 icons in place of Win 10 ones if you like (I do- run one program to patch one dll)
    - you can have a proper start menu like Win 7/XP's or a mix- configurable, supports drag 'n drop, and large hierarchical menus that no Win 10 style menu can handle- for free - Open Shell.

I use that with a Win 7 Orb.

    - you can have a form of Aero- and windows using standard frames with round corners etc.

I've used this from Win 8 onwards- some of that may make the transition more comfortable.

And you don't have to use the built-in apps either.

With build 1903, Cortana has disappeared into the background and doesn't work unless spoken to nicely. You also get a little more control of Windows update now even with Home.

Make a Macrium image before you upgrade just in case. I just had a 7-10 upgrade go sideways last week. I ended up clean installing and all is good now.

If considering Microsoft Office, shop carefully. It's interesting the Business section has different offerings from the Consumer/Home section, our church wants Publisher and so far only in the Consumer versions.

We recently spent a fair amount of money on Windows 10 upgrade licenses for our businesses Windows 7 machines, but part of me is now wondering did we need to do this?

    Hi there

    @andyp3498

Business licences are a different issue of course -- however for HOME users the old free upgrade path from W7/W8/W8.1 to W10 still works just fine --- ensure that the legacy OS is activated first -- then install the new OS as an upgrade and do it with an Ms sign in (that way you'll get a digital license for that PC).

After you've done the initial W10 install you can either install W10 again clean or restore your old W7 system and upgrade again --without needing an Ms login.

either way the system should activate perfectly.

As W7 support is ending soon I suspect that this "Backdoor" method of getting free updates might end soon --it was supposed to end years ago (to any Brits -this Saga has probably been running on longer than your whole "Brexit" stuff !!!!!).

I'd also use an ISO created by the UUPDUMP methpod rather than the MCT tool -- and do take an image backup before you start as you can then recover if things go pear shaped.

    Cheers

The discussion so far has been about retail/OEM consumer editions and licenses. If your business used volume licensing then the rules are different. It's not an area I am familiar with, but I would expect that yes, you probably did need to but the W10 licences to stay legal. @Superfly may be able to shed more light on this.
