Can a Dell Optiplex 790 tower (service tag: 5G5SNS1) run Windows 10?

I am in the process of upgrading my computers to Windows 10. My sister moved in with me and she saved the executable for the free upgrade to Windows 10 from Microsoft from 2016 and told me that it still works in 2019. I already upgraded my laptop.

I know that a Dell Optiplex 780 has display issues with Windows 10, but that has an Intel Q45/Q43 graphics and some Windows 10 updates cause 16:9 resolutions to not be available. It is hit or miss with each major update. Other than that, Windows 10 works great!

The Dell Optiplex 790, on the other hand, has an Intel HD graphics. Do not recall which one so I included the service tag: 5G5SNS1

My main concern with the 790 is 16:9 resolutions. Technically the 790 is just one step up from the 780, but it is more being that the 790 is a tower and the 780 is a smaller flat desktop.

How will Windows 10 work as far as graphics go on the 790?

Perhaps a best first step would be to visit the Dell product support page link above, for your specific service tag, and select the OS that shipped originally with the machine to be sure to get the right HW specs. There may be upgrades necessary to the BIOS, drivers, etc that may impact how W10 will install and function.

After making sure the machine is as current as possible, make a system image backup (Macrium Free is always a good idea), backup any other files on the system hard drive, and try the Windows Update Assistant for W10:

This may help detect any problems before actually trying an installation.

Then, after complete backups are secured, and Update Assistant checked, the acid test is simply to install W10. I know some of the older, less common graphics hardware has had some problems with W10 support, but my guess is Intel HD Graphics will work fine with W10. Best of luck!

I have upgraded Dells from XP & Win7 to Win10.

I agree that the only way to find out the answer is to make a system image & boot disk then try the upgrade.

You might find useful tips from other Dell Optiplex owners in the Dell forum so it's worth a quick look. You are likely to find a mixture of reports from Dell Optiplex owners saying that they have done it and reports from non-Dell Optiplex owners saying that it cannot be done.

I never publish my Dell Service Tags. The ill-disposed can abuse them by changing settings in your section of the Dell site.

I’ve upgraded Dell computers 10 years old using Windows 10 and have yet to find one that does not work. Two recommendations: upgrade memory to a minimum of 8GB and install an SDD. The SSD will breath new life into you system at a minimal expense. Just my 2 cents worth of advice. Have fun! :)

I recently upgraded my Dell Studio 1747 (approx 10 years old) with a clean install of Windows 10 - 1809 and an SSD. To say it has improved performance would be a gross understatement. It boots in less than 20 seconds and shutdowns are about 6 seconds and all this with only a first-gen i7 with 8GB of RAM.
It used to take minutes with a 7200 rpm HDD.

I removed the HDD and booted to a USB containing an ISO for W10-1809. On my Studio 1747, it was necessary to have the SSD (W10 OS) in the primary drive bay (S1) and I moved the HDD (still containing W7 files to the secondary drive bay (S2).

I have done all these steps above. I am still having an issue. New SSD and runs fast, 8GBG ram. Win7 Pro. Unplugged all other peripherals. I don't know where else to go. I will post the error message image I get in this post in my next message. I have it booted in clean boot mode at the moment.
