If I buy a CD version of W10 do I have to log into MS to login?

I just did a fresh install of W10 Pro using the USB stick method. Now when I login I have to do so with my Microsoft account. If I do an install with a real W10 disk, or perhaps an image, will I still have to sign in with my MS account? Or will it be like after the W7 to W10 free upgrade where I had my own password and didn't feel like big brother was watching me.

Was there a way I could have avoided that somewhere in the USB stick installation?

    thanks, Jay

A person chooses their login method during installation, either local or Microsoft account. It has absolutely nothing to do with what install media you used, it just depends on the choices you make during installation. Just do a clean install, it will fix everything.

As a side not, there is no such thing as a CD that holds Windows 10. Not even Linux fits on a CD. A CD holds less than 1 GB of data.

With the changes to Windows 10, you appear to be forced to create or use your Live login to allow for Roaming profiles. See #24 Clean Install Windows 10

If you are going to clean install to fix this then just disconnect from the internet before you start and the option to create a local account will be easier to access.

But you do not need to clean install at all. Just convert the existing MSAccount user account back to a local one or create an additional account that is a local one.

    There is a note though:

Some people are reporting that some recent versions of Windows 10 Home do not provide the Offline account link at this step. If this happens to you, as a workaround, you can enter a bogus phone number and click/tap on Next. The next "Confirm your phone number" screen will have the Offline account link you can click/tap on instead.

Until they fix that. I do not even worry about it since I can always set it to a local after getting the account set up. Wait until they want a way to send email without having to use a username and password.

I deliberately did a clean install of Windows 10 Home, ver. 1903 created from the MCT, on a computer connected to the internet just to verify that. The options to create a local account were still there. They are fairly unobtrusive links in the lower left corner, with a nag screen, but the option was still there.

I just put W10 Pro on another computer minutes ago and the option for an offline account, as shown in the link in bro67's post, and mentioned above by NavyLCDR is indeed still there. I just missed it the first time.

It does happen some times. Clean installed an older Toshiba laptop Friday and was not able to create a local account, could not find any way to avoid the MSA. Finally turned off Wireless and restarted the install and then was able to go with a local account.

I didn't know or think about the bogus phone number, will try that if I hit it again.

ISO was from MCT download. Flash drive built with diskpart and manual copy.
