finally I have an apparently corrupt disk.
You can check your disk.. e.g. by booting your PC from a bootable disk created from this iso:
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru

Tool- HD Tune (on that disk) - Health and Error Scan tabs.

There was a free bootable ISO from MiniTools up to version 9, but from version 10 on it became a 'paid-for' feature. The old version 9 ISO can still be found in and downloaded from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Possibly easier here, taking care to download the right version - 9.1

Download MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 9.1 - FileHippo.com

Possibly edit: No, your link is for the Windows version, not for the ISO of the bootable version.

Anyway, for safety I prefer to download from an archived copy of the original site rather than a 3rd-party repository. An Internet Archive copy of MiniTool's own download page for the bootable 9.1 ISO is here (32 and 64 bit versions):

Apologies for the delay in replying - a family holiday and then domestic responsibilities meant that I couldn't try anything - but this gave me time to think.
I managed the partition resizes by splitting the task and initially reduced the main partition, reloaded the laptop and tested the main programs.
I then expanded the SRP and again tested everything - no problems whatsoever. The disc was then backed up so that if any errors occur during the W7-W10 upgrade, I can restore from the backup.
    Now for the actual upgrade.
