Should I partition my new SSD to separate OS from programs and data?

I have a new SSD on which I will install Win 10 Home.

Is it advisable to separate the OS and the apps/programs/data into 2 separate partitions on the SSD after win 10 is installed?
Would doing this cause problems with installing and using programs, games etc?

I ask because I wonder if it would make it easier to do fresh re-installs of windows if that was necessary in the future.

Hi, assuming you have only the one disk, then what will help isolate your data from OS problems and maintenance is to keep your personal data, as far as is possible, on another partition (or disk).

Then, should you need to do a clean install, or restore a disk image of Windows, your data will (mostly) be unchanged.

Key practices: good and appropriate data backup, and of course, the routine use of disk imaging. E.g. Macrium Reflect + external storage for image files.

To consider: if a multi-user system - data privacy and appropriate use of and addition to or creation of per-user libraries. (Relocating folders is supported, but there are risks- easy to make bad mistakes).

Installed programs can include many folders, data and registry data elswewhere on C: - not just the installation folder. Thus installing these in another partition is unlikely to help in this respect.

    Hi,
A different partition on the same disk won't help reinstalls seeing it's on the same ssd
If you have a different ssd then yes install games on it instead
App's... are best on the os ssd they usually don't take up all that much space like games do.

Personal files yes you could redirect to different sdd as well but you really don't say how big this new ssd is
The larger they are the more it hurts if they go bad.

OS can be best on a 250-256gb ssd
Save a larger one for personal files and games
It's much easier to full system image each drive this way.

Untrue- you can clean install retaining one or more existing partitions on the same disk.

    Hi,
    Depends on the disk format
    GPT yeah not flawless
MBR one might end up with a partition limit issue.

I'll have a 1tb sata ssd and a 1tb HDD on the system to start with.

My impression is that, in order to take advantage of the speed of the ssd you want to have games and apps that you often use on that and music, video, photos on the slowr HDD.

    Hi9,
    Now days ssd's are cheap
250gb 860 evo is like 60.us perfect for os and most programs.
    1tb ssd best for games.

    HDD's are nearly obsolete
Use it just for system image backups not for real time file/ program/ games access.

Well I just ordered the EVO but I went for 500 gb, just because. I was going to go for an M2 NVME drive but for the reviews and bang for the buck it just didn't seem worth it.
