    Windows 10 not listed in boot options.


    I am using an ASROCK motherboard. Yesterday I tried to install Ubuntu onto a second disk, later when I tried to boot into Windows 10 I couldn't get into Windows with GRUB nor the boot list. My windows disk was initially MBR which I converted to GPT before installing Ubuntu.

    I have access to Windows RE which i can boot into.

    I have tried bootrec /fixmbr and /fixboot, both returning a success but not fixing the issue.
    bootrec /scanOs returned Windows 10 on D:/ for some reason??
    chkdsk C:/ returned no errors.
    os-prober on Ubuntu returned nothing.

    I am able to access all my files so if worst comes to worst I can save what I want and wipe both drives however I don't want to do this unless it is necessary.

    *I'm not a Linux pro

    Hi and welcome to W10F. That's exact reason for advice to disconnect all other drives when installing OS. BOOT sectors got mixed up. Try those bootrec repairs with only windows drive connected.

    After I disconnected the second drive and used the bootrec commands then tried to boot into my Windows hard drive I got a black screen saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

    That's because you converted the drive from MBR to GPT and it likely has an NTFS system partition that most computers can't boot from in UEFI mode.

    I have also been playing with Linux on a couple of systems and they are fun when it all goes wrong, IMHO that's one of the best way to learn.

    On a test rig and pen enabled tablet I installed Linux of all flavours after a Wndows installation. Grub is a bit of a pain when it goes wrong or when the partition is deleted ( to install a new distro ) I ran the same windows recovery commands and all is good to fix it. I have only used MBR with dual Win/linux experiments.

    So far my favourite is KDE Neon - it's really light and functional....

    I have only tried these on one ssd with partitions but would be interested to hear how this is fixed.

    [edit -- I do remember unchecking the fast boot in the power configuration in Win10.]

    I added a GRUB menu entry for Windows 10 NTFS, when I tried to use it I get 2 errors:
    error: no such device: /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi.
    error: unknown filesystem.

    I can't find an option for Legacy/UEFI in the BIOS to disable UEFI.

    I had an auto detected entry for Windows that errored out with:
    error: no such device: 44C0674EC06744F0.
    error: invalid signature.

    This option disappeared after I ran boot-repair on Ubuntu.

    Additionally, my second hard-drive doesn't appear in the BIOS (DEL) boot order however it does appear in the boot list selection (F11)

    Sounds like you need to create a FAT32 EFI System partition to boot Windows from.
