    Swap mobo without re-install

I recently, I had a 2600K pc die on me and I swapped out the innards (motherboard, cpu and RAM) from a 4770K box without re-installing Windows 10 and all my software. I'd read here that it was possible, and was surprised how easy it was. I just got a message about getting devices ready and that was it.

So my question is - do you think this would work going from Intel 4770K to AMD Ryzen ? I'm guessing the hardware would be too different to even boot. Any thoughts on this ?

Before the switch, I recommend remove disk drive controllers (more than likely AHCI) from device manager. Then reboot the Windows install on the new computer.

Go here, works with Windows10 too. I have tested it, pretty amazing what it can do with innards swappage....

There is a download link in the article for the program.

Do a disk image and save it on an external disk before you install the old HDD to the new MB.

There is nothing like a clean install, specially on a brand new hardware completely different from the previous.
And a new hardware deserves a SSD.

You might be right Megahertz about clean install.

I've just splashed a grand at Amazon on a 3700X, Asus 570F, 32 GB ram, 1TB ssd, modular psu etc. The Ryzen seems pretty powerful for 65W tdp.

I wouldn't do it, honestly. You take a risk on things getting corrupted. It is 100% best to start out with a complete fresh install when upgrading the Motherboard. If it were just RAM, CPU, GPU, then you would be fine.

    Hi there
it should work - just restore Windows to New Mobo using something like Macrium -- it's possible though activation could fail but sometimes it just works --- note of course that if you do restore an image and it wants activation there's no reason why you can't use the key that came say with windows supplied with your new mobo (if it did come wit windows).

Another solution is to use a W7 key (activate W7 then restore your Windows system).

Note though on the use of RYZEN CPU's -- there's been quite a bit of writeups in the literature with these causing problems with newer Linux kernels and Windows issues --these may or may not have been fixed currently so check the literature.

Ive restored an INTEL image to an AMD board -- not a Ryzen though.

Windows just goes through its things and will eventually get most of the device drivers it needs etc -- you might have to install some manually but W10 does a pretty good job these days.

    Cheers
