can I use Windows 7 Home Premium key use with Windows 10 Pro?

I have a Windows 10 64 bit Pro bootable DVD. I just bought a used older Sony Viao laptop with Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium. It came with an authentic Windows 7 key. Can I use this to do a fresh install of Windows 10 from the DVD? Thanks!

Your best bet is to upgrade the existing Windows 7 to 10. Then do a clean install of Windows 10 after that if you want to.

Windows 7 was just restored, so nothing will be lost if I do a clean install. Agreed?

You'll be relying upon the Windows 7 product key activating the first install of Windows 10 on the computer. It's a more reliable bet to upgrade an already activated Windows 7 the first time to establish the digital license for Windows 10.

You can easily do a clean install of Windows 10 once it gains a digital license from the upgrade from Windows 7. I'm just saying there is less likely of a chance of something going wrong with activation if the digital license for Windows 10 is initially established by an upgrade from Windows 7 rather than relying upon entering a Windows 7 product key into Windows 10 to activate it the first time.

I have an old Sony VAIO laptop as well which also had W7 (although W7 Ultimate) on it. Upgrade to W10 first and then clean install worked just OK -- however if you've got an OEM product the upgrade *might not* activate. I think though the Sony Vaio laptop W7 keys were actually equivalent to retail ones so it should activate and W10 will work.

As others have posted ensure W7 is activated BEFORE attempting to do the upgrade.

Another tip -- you can jump right in to latest W10 build -- simply go to the UUPDUMP site and download the W10 version that corresponds to your W7 installation e.g Home for W7 Home, choose language and run the script to create the iso.

W7 won't have automatic software iso mounter so create bootable USB via RUFUS --don't bother with creating physical DVD - slow and sometimes unreliable and run the setup.exe from the USB file -- you don't need to boot the USB in this case --you just want the setup files.

You can use the MCT but then you might get endless amounts of updates -- I'd just go for the latest 1903 build via the UUPDUMP method.
