    Upgrading to 1903

I have been running 1803 for several months now with no problems.
I have my "delay" set to 180 days so that I don't receive a buggy update.
I keep up-to-date on the various updates and felt confident that 1903 was OK to update to.
I changed my "delay" to 90 days and immediately v1809 started downloading.
I recall that 1809 had serious problems as October 2018 Update and was basically pulled from the servers.

How is it that now, on my way to upgrading to 1903, 1809 is being pushed?

I don't want to wreck a perfectly good image of Windows 10.

Hi, first, 1809 is fine for most people now and has been for quite some months.

Second, as to why 1809 rather than 1903, it is possible MS deems your PC not yet to be ready, incompatible for some manner, or not on its priority list for its rollout, which is phased, slow and cautious.

Don't expect there to be a sharp cutoff of one in favour of the other.

Simply that the 21st May release date for 1903 is less than 90 days ago. With your 90 day delay windows update won't find 1903 until August.

Just the one (very) serious problem - but that was fixed before 1809 was re-released.

Actually, let me clarify a bit...

I first reduced the "delay" to zero days, at which point the 1809 Upgrade started downloading.
I then immediately increased it to 90 days. It completed its download and started preparing to install, at which point I captured and saved the screenshot and shutdown and rebooted into my Windows 7, from where I posted this.

So I guess I'm safe to go ahead if I understand correctly.

I have 2 external USB drives attached that I use for my nightly Backups. I wonder if when it comes to downloading and installing 1903 that it will deem my PC "not ready".

1809 is mature and safe to download....

If you click the 'Check for updates' button any machine that is "deemed ready" will be offered the feature update to 1903. Starting with the 21st May 'patch Tuesday' update for 1809 build 17763.529 the feature update is now entirely optional. It is safe to check for updates because even if windows update finds 1903 you still have to click 'Download and install now' before anything happens. You are free to ignore the feature update and you machine will continue to get the latest cumulative updates.

Starting with update KB4497934, we are introducing functionality that allows you to decide when to install a feature update. You control when you get a feature update while simultaneously keeping your devices up to date. Feature updates that are available for eligible devices will appear in a separate module on the Windows Update page (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update).

Before you go ahead make a full system backup up - I use Macrium Reflect Free. You will then be able to recover easily if something goes wrong. 1809 is fine on my PCs and I recently upgraded my laptop to 1903. 1809 successfully installed.

When you are happy that you don't need to roll back, yes. It should be deleted automatically after 10 days anyway.

The safest way is to use the Windows tools, such as Disk Cleanup...
