OK, now I have looked at the other thread etc and see what you mean.

HD Tune - tried that. It is very similar to the Seagate and WDC programmes that I have used ever since I settled on their HDD for all my computers. Anyway, no problems there.

Image health - just the sort of thing I have been trying to find! I found it easy to use, especially with the Tutorial

Results were that I had 9 files that needed to be repaired. All of them had Windows Defender in the file name. None of them needed new component files so the repair was quick.
I then used the cleanup Component Store which found about 10% could be removed.
I will try the other options and see how useful they are if I ever need them in the future.

During the whole process I also used CCleaner, Spybot, Malwarebytles to check. No problems there.

I also have Lenovo Vantage which started off OK, but can no longer be simply updated. Pity as it was useful to start with, but I am not sure if it can be any more.

Running the SFC option - Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
And, A SFC Details Report was Created on your Desktop

One last query - is there anything like Image Health for the Edge browser. I think it needs one!

    Sounds good...!

Edge: nearest is the relevant Tutorial:
Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10
    - search for Edge and follow instructions at top of section.

More: Consider Edge settings and extensions:

    E.g.
How do I reset my edge settings?

Restore Default Settings in Microsoft Edge

    • Scroll down to Clear browsing data then click Choose what to clear. ...
    • To reset the entire browser, check all options, then click Clear.
    • What if Microsoft Edge is Not Opening? ...
    • Next, click Start and type: powershell and right-click PowerShell and select Run as administrator.

Thanks. I have made all the checks, although one of the PS commands was rejected as it had a = in it that was apparently wrong! The other all singing, all dancing one worked.

But fundamentally, Win 10/Edge is slow. Come back XP, all is forgiven

If 'Win 10' is slow, consider basics:
What is your idle resource use? (Should be near zero). - task manager
How much free space on C: have you?
How much free RAM have you?

Does a clean boot make any difference?

My desktop boots to workable desktop W10 Pro 1903 in 43 seconds from POST. I just have Zone Alarm and Malwarebytes in startup group. Spec AMD 8350 8 core 4GHz (fairly old), 16GB RAM, 256 SSD with 25% free. Loads of progs such as Office and Adobe. Important to check the startup group because many programs like being started in the background, I find CCleaner easiest to monitor start up groups. I have never and will never use Edge, just stick to IE11 and Firefox.

Just updated my X299 to 1903 using the Iso method, flawless, absolutely flawless

Had to fix the Defender Update snafu again, but I just entered the same command I used to fix it on 1809 and it worked just the same

I have no clue why I had to do that again, that doesn`t make any sense.

Come on Microsoft get with it.

The only reason I activated Edge was because MS claim that it is the best browser for Win 10. I thought I should try it and although I don't like it, I persisted with it.

BUT, since the 1903 upgrade Edge has become slower and IE11 has slowed tremendously. I opened my Win 7 IE11 and it took about 4 seconds to fetch my standard three tabs to load.I

For opening IE11 in Win 10 it now takes 25 seconds for the same three tabs to load.

Following your message, I have made furtyher checks.

I used msconfig to set back to defaults. Mainly to get rid of the Fast Start changes. Now Edge is about back to what it was before 1903 upgrade. IE11 remains very much worse.

Before I did that I checked TM to look at Performance. CPU was showing around 10-15 %.

Free space on C partition is 738GB and on RAM is 7.6 GB

I think there`s one thing we can all agree on here, Windows Update is the worst possible way to update to the new version.

Download the Iso file and start the install from within windows, that is if you don`t want to do a clean install.
I want to download the iso file as you suggest. But when I looked for it on Microsoft I found such a mass of confusion that I looked instead at using Option 16 on the Image Health application.
But that took me to a website where another window appeared which couldn't be closed. At the same time I got a PUP Threat warning from Malwarebytes, so I shut the lot down!

Can you recommend a better way to get the iso download.

    Thanks in advance

"since the 1903 upgrade Edge has become slower and IE11 has slowed tremendously. "

I have been using the Edge Chromium based Insider for couple months. MUCH faster loading pages and lower CPU and memory consumption ! AND you can use extensions from the Chrome Web Store vs very limited MS Store. Read about it here -
Microsoft Edge Insider preview builds are now ready for you to try
and download here (I use Canary- nightly updates) and you can transfer all bookmarks -
    Microsoft Edge Insider Channels

    "

direct 64bit ISO link in 2nd paragragh, click to begin download from MS server, r-click to Mount and run -
Download Latest Windows 10 version 1903 ISO (Direct from Microsoft server)

    Thanks mrgeek
I will check from time to time and try it when the Win 10 version preview arrives. In the meantime I will relegate my Win10 PC to backup status and go back to my Win 7 PC. I will also try the iso download for emergencies!

By the way. Nobody seems to be able to explain why IE11 is now 5 times slower (at least) after the 1903 upgrade.

Not the case here after 1903 and ~6 other previous version updates, I'm a regular user of IE 11, exactly same after 1903 with any Web Browser IE 11, Edge, Chrome.

In each case starting with an "about:blank" page, same settings approximately in all of them which cuts out website variables, caches, pre-loading pages and so forth.

Other variables are things like CCleaner, Spybot, and configurations of those, which can slow things up depending on their configuration and use. I no longer use either.

SFC has never turned up anything in 4 years, nor has DISM.
