Problem updating from 1809 to 1903

Hi,

I’ve been waiting to see when my PC would download the latest version of Windows 10 (1903). I eventually cleared some rubbish I’d collected, made a clone of my C drive onto an external USB SSD using Macrium and went to the MS site to manually download 1903.

My PC was checked and all appeared OK. I downloaded some files which took ~8 minutes then the PC proceeded to update then I got the message “This PC can’t run Windows 10” and an error – oxc 1900201. This according to Microsoft “…may signify that your PC doesn’t meet the minimum requirements to download or install the upgrade to Windows 10.”

This Optiplex is ~2 years old, the CPU is an i5-7500 running at 3.4 Ghz, and it has 12 Gb of RAM. There’s plenty of room on the SSD (it’s a 250 Gb and I’m using well under a hundred).

Is this a one off or a well documented issue with 1903 ?

No I didn't have my external usb drive connected.

I ran sfc and chkdsk earlier today and they ran ok.

I also had update problems with Windows Update, impossible to solve: -(

I used Microsoft's MediaCreatorTool directly to download and update my system which was already in Windows 10 but refused updates.

It's a little long (downloads all the equivalent of the official DVD) but very effective.

I have not lost any applications already installed, documents or accounts!

Choose the Update option when it is proposed.

But this tool also allows you to create the official ISO for later!

Unfortunately impossible to do both at the same time, it is necessary to re-download again: -(

(There may be a trick but I haven't tested it!!!)

I would treat it as an old PC and take the same precautions I would take on an older PC. That is, disable either in BIOS or in Device Manager all not-necessary devices (audio, LAN, Wi-Fi, TV tuner etc) and disconnect any printer and other USB devices. You won't need them until Windows upgrade is complete, so why let Windows try replacing the drivers and mess them? I would also disable all not-critical services and startup applications. Of course I would disable Antivirus (if any) to avoid interrupting the upgrade and causing problems. Then, I would try to manually upgrade to the next build by mounting the ISO (even better extract the files to a folder) and running Setup. Assuming the upgrade completed successfully, I would then enable the devices one-by-one and would install proper drivers (I prefer to avoid Windows Update and manually install latest official OEM drivers). I would then enable the disabled services and startup applications and upgrade any application necessary. Some applications (MS Office, Nero and others) may assume you changed computer and require to activate them again. Good luck.

I have updated from 1803 to 1903 apart from one bsod it took about 2 hours. It works ok but sometimes when I boot, after POST but before windows 'blue window' appears it crashes bsod caused by page fault in non paged area arcctrl.sys (whocrashed). Rebooting it appears OK and this is a random bsod. All drivers are uptodate and device manager looks ok. Has anyone else had this issue.
