Yesterday I upgraded my old Acer Extensa (Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM) laptop from v1809 to v1903. I saw something it might help. Before starting the upgrade, I saw something like "Change Windows Update behavior". If you click on that, you are asked if you want to run Windows Update first and install new drivers and updates or do it later. Of course you should by all means avoid any updates in old computers, so make sure you select the second option (do it later). When successfully into v1903 you can do any updates necessary.
