"Windows Update Troubleshooter tool (which reported issues with existing update files in the system and offered option for me to delete these. Took that option. It then reported that it fixed some broken links/files.)"

That tool is built-in to 1903 and at least thru 1803. I like to run that BEFORE trying any Feature updates. Have done 1903 updates to over a dozen computers that I support already, several with 1803 and not one has failed on the first try from either 'Download and install' button on Settings/WU page or by downloading and creating an ISO and running within Windows.

    That's good to know. Thanks.

Quick update: The Comodo issue was indeed resolved with a reinstall. All is good now.

Thanks. Yes, you can skip as many versions as you like. At various times I have used the 1903 ISO made using the Media Creation Tool to perform a successful in-place upgrade to 1903 direct from 1507, 1511, 1709, 1803 and 1809 (the only reason 1607 & 1703 are missing from that list is that I haven't bothered to test them (yet)).
I am having problems with 2004 and it seems you are saying that I can skip this update and still install the next one, is that correct?

Yes, you can skip as many generations as you like. The next one will be along in about 6 months.

Bear in mind though that if the problem you are having is in installing the 2004 update you may have the same problem with the next one.

If on the other hand your problem is that you tried 2004, it had bugs or you didn't like it so you rolled back, then yes, just wait for the next one.

You will always have problems with the next version, just stick with what works.

    Running 1909 Pro.

Got the notice from MS to do the update.

You DO NOT have to update just because MS says you can.

You have 10 days to go back to 1909 using the Recovery partition that Windows created when you updated to 2004.

    Do that.

You can keep using 1909 forever

I had an image and restored it. The life cycle of 1909 ends in May 2021 meaning that there will not be any more updates to it after that, so I was hoping that they will either get 2004 fixed or they will have a better version coming out later this year or I can bypass 2004 and install the newer version.

1903 got off to a rocky start, but was regarded a solid and stable by the time 1909 came out.

1909 was a minor update, installed like a cumulative update. It changed some features (or rather, turned on features that by then were already in the 1903 code). Some didn't like the changes and uinstalled it. These days it seems to be thought of as rock solid.

The next version is rumoured to be another small enablement package, same as the 1903/1909 one. Though if you stick to 1909 it will have to be done by a full install. It's also rumoured to be the one that replaces the old Edge with the new Chromium Edge. I'm wiling to bet many will say 'stick with the tried and trusted 2004'
