Okay to skip older Feature updates and just install the latest?

    Hi,

Just recovered to an older clean image of my laptop. The issue is the version of Windows 10 (Home) is a couple years old.

Am wondering if it is possible to skip the interim feature updates (eg. 1803, 1809) and just download and install the latest 1903?

Or is it necessary to update to these before updating to the latest?

    Thanks

Sounds like you are on 1709. Many have jumped from 1709 straight to 1903. If it's offered to you thru Windows Update, go for it.

What if it isn't? I mean if 1803 is offered first via Windows update? Does this need to be installed first? Reason I'm asking is because I'm doing this a second time and hoping to skip the interim updates since they can take a while to download and install. Am thinking of creating usb stick to just install 1903.

Just wanted to confirm whether interim feature updates are required installs before updating to the latest.

I have heard that some needed to, but I don't have the details. I believe another member @Bree has done this, or has heard of it happening. Maybe he can shed some light. Not sure if he's on right now, but he'll get back. Hold just a while.

I would download the 1903 iso, mount it and run setup.

Or use Update Assistant or MCT. MCT direct to upgrade or use it to create the ISO. Either will check compatibility and space, etc. before proceeding. Always do a backup first. Always.

Thanks. Yes, you can skip as many versions as you like. At various times I have used the 1903 ISO made using the Media Creation Tool to perform a successful in-place upgrade to 1903 direct from 1507, 1511, 1709, 1803 and 1809 (the only reason 1607 & 1703 are missing from that list is that I haven't bothered to test them (yet)).

Recently I tested the 1709 to 1903 upgrade here...

Thanks to all for the replies.

And happy to report it worked... went from 1607 to 1903 successfully. Although not without some effort.

It was a bit of a process because there was a half downloaded and failed 1803 update stuck in Windows Update... (before I could get to trying do the 1903 update, there were a number of Windows "update" attempts I let run that eventually failed). Had hoped to avoid these but it seems the Windows update manager was keen to have updates done as soon as possible after restoring the old system image. (Maybe someone can advise how to stop these updates coming in between a system restore and before you can initiate a Windows update with the latest Feature update.)

Just gonna leave some extra info in case someone finds this and has questions about doing similar updates.

The details (that got me there in the end) for update 1903:

1st attempt - It started then stopped with an error which turned out to be issues with having a USB attached (weird given this is the function of these kinds of Media Creation setups). Solved by copying all the update files from the USB to a local drive.

2nd attempt - Machine buzzed away for 60 mins then aborted update, turned out to be the borked interim update (1803) that was stopping the update process. Solved by downloading and running the Windows Update Troubleshooter tool (which reported issues with existing update files in the system and offered option for me to delete these. Took that option. It then reported that it fixed some broken links/files.)

3rd attempt - Started update process which initiated search for updates (and I thought this was the update), then the machine worked away for slightly more than 2 hours and rebooted 2-3 times. Then it finally flicked back to life with login screen. Finally, 1903 installed.

Note: I did not use the Windows Media Creation Tool. Instead downloaded the ISO from Windows update page (by using the user agent hack) and used the Rufus tool to build the USB. This was actually the easiest part of the process.

Note 2: So far only noticed one issue. Something seems to have happened with the Comodo Firewall and it intermittently displays "Comodo Application Agent is not running". It's a bit strange because it doesn't happen with every boot. Sometimes it loads and runs fine. Other times not. But more often not. A web search failed to give any definitive answer on this - it doesn't look like something widespread. So going to reinstall it and see if that fixes the issue. Another PC which did the upgrade via the normal Windows update process, did so without any problems with same Comodo app.

Yes, that is a known bug, yet to be fixed - and you used the known workaround.
