    Windows Update Failed 0x80080005

This is a new laptop with W10 Pro 1903 - only had it a week - and now I'm getting this error code trying to check for updates.

I've tried running DISM and sfc /scannow which both report no errors so can anyone point to a solution please?

    Thanks

    Hi, please see
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...d-83fcb80e8f2f

    and
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

    from
    Windows 10 Tutorial Index

which automates the commands in one part of the first link.

You'll find more ideas if you search for the error number either generally or perhaps on this forum.

Thanks but I have already tried the steps outlined in your first option to no avail.
I think I might have a seriously corrupted Windows 10 - no idea how. I am reluctant to do a complete recovery (restore laptop to its original factory state) because I will have to reinstall all my programs. As I updated to Windows 10 1903 shortly after getting this laptop, if I followed the option of going back to a previous version of Windows would I lose all my programs and, thus, have to reinstall?
    Thanks

You can perform an in-place upgrade repair of 1903, for which you need a compatible 1903 iso, freely available.

    Tutorial available: simple instructions:
    Rt click iso
    Mount
Open new drive letter in file explorer
    Double click setup.exe

'Go back to previous' is available for up to 10 days after upgrading (relies on Windows.old being present).
If that succeeds, you would keep everything.

You may also wish to check your disk if you are experiencing corruption:
HD Tune (free), Health and Error Scan tabs.
    If ok, then run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    (This only tests)
from an admin command or Powershell prompt.

A wise person might do that before making any further changes.

Note: especially before and after making major changes, the routine use of disk imaging is very frequently recommended here e.g. Macrium Reflect (free).

For example, if it's more than 10 days since you upgraded and you had an image of either 1903 working well or 1809, you could revert to those by restoring the appropriate image.

Thank you for that. I still have windows.old (created on 14 June) so 'go back to previous' seems my best option as I want to keep all my already installed programs.
I ran HDTune and there were no problems with my SSD. Also chkdsk c:/scan reported no errors. So I am thinking that I've somehow got a corrupted registry. The problems include things like clicking on a program and then nothing happening. Also hitting Ctl-Alt-Del brings up the blue screen with Task Manager but clicking on Task Manager gets rid of the blue screen but task manager does not run.

So I'll 'go back to previous'. Thanks again.

Assuming you have Home (your specs say Win 7...) then assuming also you got 1903 via Windows Update, note that 1809 (assuming that's the build you're going back to) from build 17763.557 will not install 1903 unless you click 'Download and Install' until end of life of 1809.

Earlier builds of 1809 will install it automatically.

If you installed 1903 by other means than WU please be aware that this bypasses any protective compatibility checks by MS.

My profile is out of date. I have Win 10 Pro so I should, hopefully, be alright. I'll change my profile

Ok, if Pro you can defer for 365 days. Sorry, you did say in your first post now I've looked again.
