Can I still upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10?

My wife no longer uses her Win 8.1 notebook and I'm wondering if I can update it to Windows 10 for free?

And if yes, how do I go about it?

    Thank you.

Official period os over, but users still report that upgrades are successful.

There are Tutorials for this, by Brink:

Tenforums tutorials | How to Upgrade to Windows 10

Basically, check your version and language (home, pro.., also cjeck 32 or 64 bit version, en-us, etc), download media cresting tool and save ISO. Mount ISO and run Setup.exe - this is Option 5 in tutorials

Thanks AndreTen, after a bit of googling I found a link (can't remember where now) and it offered to make an iso but I opted to update in situ and it all went very easily. I didn't see anything about 32 or 64 bit but after it had finished I now have a 64 bit os and it has a product number and a 'serial' number too so it all looks to be valid.

I wouldn't have been too upset if it had failed as the spec of the notebook isn't particularly inspiring, but hey, it is better than putting a club hammer through and someone out there will be glad of it!

Probably the easiest upgrade I've done, this was the fourth, so I'm happy!

I went a slightly different route I used (as an experiment) Windows Upgrade assistant (1903)
But weirdly it upgraded to windows 10 Home and not pro.
I haven't figured out why that happen, still working on it.

Probably OEM original license was for Home. Just guessing.

The link I followed was on the system being upgraded so as I did a clean install that history has gone too. I'm pretty sure is was an MS link though.

    Hi folks
    @thomaseg1

If it activated then you are fine !!! otherwise to install the edition of windows you want add a file called ei.cfg to the sources directory of the windows install iso or usb then it will prompt for edition to install.

The ei.cfg file should just have this (it's a text file) in it

put that into the sources file of the windows install media and you are done. If using an ISO extract the iso , insert into sources and re-create the iso --it's far easier though to use a usb -- use rufus or whatever to create a bootable usb from an iso.

I'd download the latest windows iso from UUPDUMP, select the edition you want and install -- after upgrade or if prompted for a key enter the W8.1 key.

    Cheers
