Error while doing an in-place installation. Error:0xC1900101-0x20017

I am trying to update to 1903 from 1803 using an in-place upgrade.

I tried the update assistant, everything goes fine until the restart now dialogue appears, after restarting it takes me to the recovery console and gives an option to boot into Windows 10, after booting, all the changes are rolled back.

I tried the same using an ISO file, after the first restart, everything is rolled back and this error is displayed:
Error while doing an in-place installation. Error:0xC1900101-0x20017-capture.jpg

on clicking troubleshooting tips, Windows help shows that it's a driver related issue.

Hi, first I'd suggest you run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt and report the summary result. This only checks.

    If that's ok..
Given the failures to remove SR points, something is astray there, so do that manually by turning SR off.

    uicciso.dll
is reported as a problem. It's a MS file, with many comments of this sort.

    Comments here are relevant:
SOLVED: Trouble updating to 1803 - TechTablets
    albeit only as a pointer.

Please note that by manually attempting to upgrade, you are bypassing MS checks on whether your system is likely to be compatible with 1903.

Before attempting an upgrade, I would strongly recommend you make sure you have an up to date disk image as is so often recommended here, permitting recovery should something go badly wrong.

There are of course other issues.

It may be that you would need to do an in-place upgrade repair of your existing installation first for which you'd need an iso of the same build. (Tutorial available, keeps all progs and data).

Running the /scan thing gives me this error:
    Code:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

A snapshot error occured while scanning this drive. Run an offline scan and fix.
I am using Rollback Rx Home for backup purpose, i always take snapshots of my C drive before i do any updates or any kinds of such stuff. So i never use System Restore and it's turned off.

I don't know what's interrupting the installation - whether it's my AV or RollBack RX itself ?? (i don't think so rollback rx can be the culprit because it protects the snapshots and not the actual files on C drive)
but also the troubleshooting guide on MSFT says that this kind of error code is for driver related issues.

I ran the installation 5 times till now, weird thing is in one of the attempt i got a BSOD with stopcode Memory Management. I ran a memory diagnostic telling me everything's ok.

I disabled WU service, BITS service earlier but i re-enabled and tried but in vain nothing changed.

When I have encountered errors like this, I use a "repair/install" to correct them. Use the Media Creation Tool to create an ISO of the version matching your system. I did this recently when I experienced problems running DISM or SFC. That corrected the problems and installed 1903. Just a suggestion ...

Hi, you might not have SR enabled, but you do have a lot of these in the log:

2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 0. Error: 0x80042302
2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 1. Error: 0x80042302
2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 2. Error: 0x80042302
2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 3. Error: 0x80042302
2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 4. Error: 0x80042302
2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 5. Error: 0x80042302
2019-06-02 14:40:46, Error SP Error removing SR checkpoint 6. Error: 0x80042302

    - which I assume are System Restore related- if so, certainly VSS related.
But these may be an effect of having Rollback RX installed. Just a guess.

You will need to check Rollback RX's compatibility with feature updates/upgrades.

See this (do you have the appropriate version of Rollback RX?)

Running the /scan thing gives me this error:
Strange. This is a very long-standing MS file system check tool. You should find out what's going on here.

This is what you should see (command prompt):
Error while doing an in-place installation. Error:0xC1900101-0x20017-snap-2019-06-02-14.23.58.png

Suggests maybe some of your services are in an unexpected state.

Yep, my guess was right, it was an issue with Rollback RX, didn't know there was an option that would reject irreversible updates in Rollback RX. Thanks a lot :) this article was really helpful

, finally installation went well and successfully upgraded to 1903.
