Upgrade Assistant From 1809 to 1903 Stuck at 27%

    Greetings

I haven't gotten the Feature Update notification in Update and Security, so I decided to download the Upgrade Assistant to do the update manually.

I ran the download assistant and got 3 green check marks. The update seemed to download without incident. The installation then began after the system went to the blank blue screen. I got a notification that the install would take about 90 minutes and the machine would restart several times. OK.

I came back 2 hours later and the update was stuck at 27%. I restarted the machine and restored an image taken just prior to the update.

Thinking I was, perhaps a bit hasty, I downloaded the assistant again and ran it again. The update downloaded and installation appeared to start. I went to bed. After I got up about 6 hours later, I checked and the update was stuck at 27%. I again restored a pre-update image.

Here are some details. Maybe I should have put these at the top of the post

-am upgrading from 1809. Have downloaded and installed all available updates. Build is 17763.529. Latest versions of drivers available from Dell are installed (I did notice that certain driver updates were suggested for certain devices, but I couldn't find the suggested driver versions)

-Machine is an XPS 9550 attached to a Dell D16 Thunderbolt dock with a 240W power supply. The connection to the dock is a cable from the internal Thunderbolt port

-the internal drive is a 512GB NVMe M.2

    -processor is i7 6700HQ

    -32GB RAM

-there are 2 external drives attached to USB ports (one for backup and one for data). The data drive is attached to an internal USB port. The backup drive is attached to the Dell dock

-there are 2 MIDI controllers connected to the Thunderbolt dock. Also attached to the dock is a unified receiver for my mouse and keyboard. Finally, the USB cable from the monitor is attached to the dock

-I use an external monitor attached to an internal HDMI port. As mentioned above, it is attached to the Dell dock. There is an ILok dongle attached to one of the ports on the back of the monitor

-there is an audio interface attached to an internal USB port

Please forgive the rather pedantic detail, but I wanted to make sure you guys had all the info so that you could respond with foreknowledge if you choose to do so.

So any ideas? Any quick adjustments? Can I alter my physical configuration and try again? Disconnect everything, attach the original power supply and redo? Or should I just take a pass and wait til it shows up in Update and Security? If I wait, will I still have the same issues? Lots of questions and any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks and Happy Memorial Day to my American cousins (from the wilds of northern Alberta)

Remove exteranl hard drives that can give problems. If its running leave it to run the times vary I have done 5 pcs today an I5 took 40 mins an I7 took 90 mins one pc took 5 hours and one took 8 hours. So its a matter of waiting on the first part you can open programs to check its still running. What seems to effect it is how full the hd is if it need to create the recovery parition it may have to shift gigs of data in order to create it. Once its done the first 100% the dos part after goes quick what is stupid is once installed it checks and finds 3 updates

Personally, I always do a fresh install when upgrading to a new version. I don't have a lot of software to reinstall anyway, so I don't mind doing it. I just done mine today. I had one problem, but it took care of itself.

Download Upgrade ISO and install from USB

2 of 8 computers failed the upgrade.
I downloaded the iso and ran it from a usb (while the Win 10 was running)
Both computers upgraded with no trouble.

I think this is going to be a common problem, but I don't know why

I seem to have lost a reply here. Anyway, just wanted to report back:

-unattached external drives and audio interface. Restarted machine and the update installed. Thanks for the tip Samuria.
-turned off machine and reattached drives and interface.
-turned on machine and it just sat there thinking at the Dell splash screen.
    -restart 2...same thing.
-restart 3...Automatic Startup Repair opened and I got to a place where I could start Windows.
    -wallpaper gone. No big deal.
-taskbar icons gone. Can re-pin those.
-could not pin programs to taskbar.
-checked gpedit and "do not allow pin to taskbar" was not configured.

Thanks for the tip on fresh install vgk. That probably makes sense. But this is my music OS and reinstalling would be a looooong process. Would like to avoid if I can.

Jerry, what's the process? Download the update, put it on flash drive, run the routine from the flash drive? Did the update leave everything in place? The reason I ask is, a big chunk of the update assistant routine seemed to run while Windows was open.

Anyway, I rolled back to pre-update state and I'm not sure where to go from here. If I wait until it shows in Updates, will this re-occur? Guidance from better minds most welcome.

    Got the download here:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

Update now did not work on 2 of my machines as it stopped with "incapability errors"

So downloaded installation media and created installation files on a USB.

I ran the USB from the earlier version of Windows 10 directly by clinking on setup (did not boot into)
The complete install ran with no problem and booted into 1903 with everything preserved (Win Server network with all applications running)

Thanks for the suggestion Jerry. I went through the routine. However the 1903 would not install from the flash drive. With, or without, any external drives attached. The update routine kept referring me to this site:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/...for-windows-10

I did get lucky the third time:

-third time...I removed the drive and the Dell Thunderbolt dock from the machine and attached the original power supply. The update installed without a hitch and I was able to boot into Windows. I reattached the drive to the internal USB port...all good. I then reattached the Thunderbolt dock and the system got stuck as in the second pass. In an amazing leap of deductive thought (self-deprecating humour there) I got the impression that there was a conflict with the dock.

It was sort of the dock and sort of the Thunderbolt controller. In order to have use of peripherals attached to the dock before Windows booted up, I had to make some changes to the docks and Thunderbolt configuration in the BIOS...as per Dell's info page:

    Access Denied

That was great at the time. But it prevented Windows from booting after installing Windows version 1903. So I went into the BIOS to System Configuration > Thunderbolt Adapter Configuration and disabled Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Boot Support and Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Pre-boot Modules. That took care of the problem...or so I thought. My (external) mouse and keyboard receiver is attached to the dock. I had no use of any peripherals attached to the dock until I got into Windows. When I was in Windows, the response from the mouse and keyboard were uneven.

I went back into the BIOS and activated Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Boot Support. The machine would not go past the Dell splash screen. I finally unchecked Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Boot Support and checked Enable Thunderbolt Adapter Pre-boot Modules. The system got me to the Windows boot manager, where I was able to use the mouse attached to the dock to select the updated Windows 10 OS. When I got into Windows, all of the peripherals attached to the dock were functional.

So that is good. However, I am unable to use the mouse, keyboard or access the drive attached to the dock until I get to the Windows boot manager. I am guessing that is a result of the Thunderbolt adapter option I left de-selected in the BIOS.
This where I am now. This is terribly verbose. But I hope that it may help someone else dealing with 1903 upgrade issues.
This is not a criticism of Dell. Dell should produce a BIOS and/or driver update to rectify the issue. I did notice that Dell is supporting Windows 10 1903 on the XPS 9550 and even several generations before that....very good!

I didn't post this to make Dell look bad. I posted this over-long novel to get help, which I did and in hopes that others might benefit from my tripping over a partial workaround. I am guessing that there are a bunch of folks at TenForums with XPS machines and perhaps something attached to the Thunderbolt port.

I posted something similar on the Dell forum, hoping somebody from Dell would see it. I wasn't playing one forum off on the other.

Happy Memorial Day from the wilds of Northern Alberta.

Sounds like you have this pretty narrowed down. Dell needs to work with Microsoft to resolve the issue.

    You have 2 options:
1- turn thunderbolt off in the bios (or if necessary not use the dock) and wait for a fix
2-Wait till there is a device update approved by Microsoft to work with 1903 before keeping the update.

Ok so my computer has the same problem and it stuck at 27 percent so how would I restart or turn off the computer? Or should I just unplug my external hard drive in the middle of the update?

Do not unplug in the middle of Update ! Shut down, unplug all usb devices except keyboard and mouse, and restart the Upgrade process.
