Update Version 1803 to 1809 Consistently Gets Error 0xc1900101

    Things I've tried:
    • Updated all the drivers using Device Manager (Update driver -> Search -> "The best drivers...")
    • sfc.exe /scannow, followed by dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    • The Microsoft Windows Update Diagnostic wizard, wu10.diagcab
    • Manual installation of update with Windows10Upgrade9252.exe
    • Moving down the main partition upper boundary to leave 500 MB of unused space

System OS is Windows 10 Pro, Version 1803 for x64 systems.
Motherboard is ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Processor is AMD FX-8370 with Wraith fan
System on C:, HD is WD 2 TB; 100 MB EFI system partition (originally formatted for Windows 7 installation)
Second 2 TB HD for data - accessed through file manager and applications, NOT accessed through C:\Users\...
Two 4 TB RAID drives on USB for backup
    Norton Security
    Malwarebytes
    Acronis
Two printers by wired Ethernet through router, none directly connected.
Various USB peripherals - FAX modem, scanner (turned off), whatever.
I keep everything up to date, particularly Norton, MBAM, and Windows.

    System is trouble-free, otherwise.

I would like to solve this problem before the new Version 1903 is rolled out to my machine.

Try jumping into the v1903 wagon (now available using MCT).

When you use a Windows 10 installation DVD to update and select "preserve files and applications," can I expect all my applications to remain working, assuming that they are compatible with v1903, just like Windows Update?

Hello Motorfingers, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You shouldn't lose anything updating directly to 1903 using the Windows Update Assistant.

I've already used that utility, lately with the same version (9252) to try to update to 1809 and it failed with the same error 0xc1900101. I can expect it to work for v 1903?

    It won't hurt to try.

I tried Update Assistant just now and it wants to update to v1809, which I've tried, and which fails with error 0xc1900101. I'll try every day until I see v1903.

I've tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it rebuilds the Windows Update database, which allows WU to try to install v1809 again - which fails with error 0xc1900101. I'm thinking the WMC approach is my best bet, because I think that the upgrade is going to need to repartition my system drive, some of which can't be done while the system is running. I was concerned that this would cause problems with some of my apps and held off.

If you have a 3rd party AV program installed, did you disable or uninstall it before trying to upgrade?

You could also download a Windows 10 v1903 ISO file below....

    Download Windows 10 ISO File

...and upgrade to v1903 using the ISO without losing anything.

I have three AV programs installed: Norton Security, Malwarebytes Premium, and Acronis Live Ransomware Protection, and no, I didn't disable or uninstall them. My laptop, which came with Windows 7 and upgraded OK the first time to v1809, has its only HD partitioned into several pieces, including a 500 MB unallocated space, a 14 GB and an 850 MB recovery partition, and a 100 MB EFI partition. My main computer has only the 100 MB EFI partition. I contracted the main system/data partition and allowed a 500 MB unallocated area to get the April 9, 2019—KB4493464 (OS Build 17134.706) update to install, but one of the updates since has eliminated this partition. I can't make room for a 14 GB partition or unallocated space while the main computer's system is running because of unmoveable files. Booting from an installation DVD to upgrade will make that possible, of course. I'll try that to go straight to v1903.

I would start by backing up every partition and then removing all third party security programs. Again, try with v1903 ISO.
