You will need a Windows 10 Installation key that you will have to purchase. There is no upgrade path from Vista so even if you have the Vista key on a printed label on the laptop it won't be of any use with Windows 10.

Windows 10 will ruin for awhile but eventually it will not and will be unusable until it is activated which means you will need a key.

    Hi there
If you have a W7 license anywhere (Home, Pro, or Ultimate) use that key - the Free update mechanism is still working !!!!!!!!

I created a brand new W10 installation yesterday with a W7 key donkeys years old -- and W10 still activated.

(W8/W8.1 keys still OK too I think).

    Cheers

    hi jimbo,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look around. I may have the Win 7 disc and key, but I am not sure.
